Thursday 25 May. 5 am and it`s off to Cap de Cavalleria. En route between Es Mercadal and the Cap I heard Quail very close by the road but after an hour still failed to see one but saw my only Great Tit. I drove right to the lighthouse at the Cap but be prepared for a slow and very bumpy ride. There were Linnets, Stonechats, Blue Rock Thrush and Sardinian Warbler either side as I drove. At the Cap was one of the birds I`d looked forward to seeing, Audouin`s Gull, great views as well. Thekla Lark and Tawny Pipit easily spotted, Cory`s Shearwater close to shore and Egyptian Vulture overhead. Shag sitting on rocks just offshore, with Swift and Rock Dove around the cliffs and Spotted Flycatcher on the lighthouse fence. Two more species I wanted to see but didn`t show on this occasion were Spectacled Warbler and Alpine Swift. |

Friday 26 May. Up at 5 am and head for Son Bou hoping for Great Reed and Moustached Warbler. This is the largest reed bed on Menorca and situated beside a very popular beach so by 9 am there`s alot of people walking around. Day started well with 3 Purple Heron and 1 Grey Heron arriving followed by a Water Rail. Then I had excellent views of a female Marsh Harrier sitting beside the reeds on a bush and later a pair drifted gracefully across the beds. There were Tawny Pipit on the dunes behind, Stonechat and Sardinian Warbler in the bushes, lots of Cetti`s in the reeds along with Fan Tailed and Reed Warbler with Swallow overhead. Coot, Moorhen and Little Grebe on the water were accompanied by dodgy looking Mallard. As for Great Reed and Moustached Warbler, I think they were on holiday. |

Saturday 27 May. Whistle stop tour. First stop Son Park. Another site for Great Reed and Moustached Warbler. A bit windy this morning. (The weather, not me). Osprey, Raven and Swallow overhead with Fan Tailed Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher and Nightingale in the area. This was not Great Reed and Mastouched Warbler`s holiday destination. Next stop Cala En Porter for Alpine Swift. Good views of Swift and Pallid Swift but no Alpine. Final stop El Toro, Great to see Honey Buzzard in the thermals and Blue Rock Thrush but no Alpine Swift. |
