Smoke Detection
DIVERSE consultants work with several of the leading
smoke detector companies in Europe. The requirement is to
detect (at a particular level) the change in scattered
(Tyndall Cell) or transmitted light. The principle relies on
light scattering from fine smoke particles such as those
found in the early stages of a fire. Smoke particles
coalesce over time and form larger particles, so a more
sensitive smoke detector will detect a fire earlier.
DIVERSE has designed optics for this application and
provided assistance with the attendant electronic design.
Nuisance Dust
DIVERSE has been involved in evaluating dust
collected on a sample paper. The density of the collection
is used to make assessment of a legal nuisance.
Escapeway Exit Guide
DIVERSE provided the technology input for an award
winning emergency exit direction indicator. The system is
based on a laser pointing system that relies on optical back
scatter from smoke particles. The scattered light, at near
floor level, provides a direct and obvious indication of the
escape route. As with the smoke cells this laser technique
relies on Rayleigh and Mie scattering principles.
