Optical Engineering &
Instrumentation
The modern boom in the telecomms marketplace has presented new challenges
to component manufacturers. Novel materials, new processes and greater
opto-mechanical integration have led to a range of manufacturing and ATE
issues that had never been encountered before. Diverse are uniquely
placed to help manufacturers solve these difficult problems by providing
specialist optical engineering support allied to instrumentation development
experience.

Examples of our experience include both stand-alone and
PC based laser diode inspection shown above.

Measures the critical cleave angle on a Lithium
Niobate crystal to a fraction of a degree.
|
Another example is QA equipment for testing the cleave
angle on integrated-optic crystals and ensuring that
coupling fibres are correctly aligned to the assembly (see
above).
|
Automated alignment equipment was designed for positioning
fibres in the correct location during the manufacture of pig-tailed
lasers diodes. The system worked by bending the optic fibre
ferrule to the point at which maximum light coupled to the loss
was obtained. The ferrule was then taken beyond yield point so that,
when released, the fibre returned to the point of maximum coupling.

Our work on the efficiency of reflectivity
coatings on monomode coated fibre ends required the development of equipment
with a measurement accuracy of 0.01% and a positional resolution of ~1µm.
Diverse also hold patent applications relating to the alignment of multiple-fibre
assemblies for the manufacture of integrated optical components. |
