BACK TO ORIGINS INDEX

The Green Man is varied in style. In some examples vegetation exudes from the mouth, ears, nose or eyes to encircle the face, or his features are formed entirely from vegetation. There are so many variations on the theme, for example sometimes vegetation appears to sprout from above or below the eyes. Whilst in others the face peers through vegetation.

Below are some examples which show some variations in style.

In this example foliage sprouts from the mouth to encircle the face, the Green Man has a 'wild' appearance.

Foliage on this Green Man sprouts from the side of the nose.

In this example from Norwich Cathedral  foliage issues from above and below the eyes. Notice also that the face is obviously 'human' in appearance possible a representation of a known figure.

This font carving shows the ingenious ways in which the image of the Green Man has been interpreted over the centuries, all can be found on the Green Man East Anglia website.

This Victorian restoration could be a Green Woman which if so is very rare.

The above are just a few examples how the Green Man has been interpreted in stone and wood over the centuries. The Green Man East Anglia website contains many variations on this theme.
