A repainted Green Man roof boss, monk-like in appearance. The vegetation sprouts from over and under the eyes which makes this example less typical, perhaps he was based on a living figure.
The Green Man above contrasts sharply with the above, the face has a more tortured look. vegetation issues from the mouth and ears which stick out in an animal like fashion.

wpe1C.jpg (20623 bytes) I couldn't possibly leave out Norwich's most famous Green Man.
wpe1E.jpg (19875 bytes) As mentioned in earlier text this example illustrates how vegetation is sometimes depicted sprouting from above and below the eyes. Notice what appears to be a tricorn hat.
wpe3.jpg (10078 bytes) These examples illustrate the many facets of the Green Man as interpreted by the ancient stone mason.
wpe22.jpg (23545 bytes) This cloister boss has the more traditional vegetation sprouting from the mouth, but the addition of small hands emerging from each corner of the mouth makes this Green Man even more strange.

wpe24.jpg (16747 bytes) Another of the repainted roof bosses in the cloisters.
wpe27.jpg (45483 bytes) This Green Man can also be found in the cloisters of the cathedral. As you can see this example along with many others is unpainted. I presume they were all once painted in bright colours.

Norwich Cathedral is without doubt a jewel in East Anglia's crown in it's own right, but it is also a haven for images of the Green Man. Above are just a few from the cloisters including some lesser known examples. Bosses date from 14th-15th c
