BOKKEN

A Bokken is a replica sword made from wood, usually white or red oak. It is made the same shape as a real sword and has a plastic guard called a tsuba. Most
people starting to practice the art of Iaido will start the training with a Bokken or an Iaito. The disadvantages of the Bokken is that it has no saya or sheath that covers the blade, so the practitioner will not be able to practice
with the saya in the opposite hand.

BUTTERFLY KNIVES

The butterfly knives are a weapon mostly associated
with Wing ChunKung Fu and have many different names
as with most Chinese weapons; the most common
are the Bot Cham Doe or the Eight Slash Knives.

Looking after the knives Today most the weapons are
made from stainless steel and require little looking after, but they should still be wiped and oiled occasionally. In the days of old as with all metal weapons they were prone to rust and took lots of oiling and looking after. The blades should never

be kept in their sheaths as the acid in real leather or chemicals in fake ones will ruin your knives. The traditional way to hang your knives on the wall are blades crossed and points down.

Using the knife There is the back and the front of a bot Cham Doe blade. The area from the canter to the point is best for striking in a cutting motion because it is quicker and has more power near the front. The area from the canter to the guard is best for defense to an opponent's blade or staff due to the leverage.
The correct way to hold the Bot Cham Doe is with the fingers and thumb wrapped around the handle and not with the thumb pushed against the hook on the handle, even though this may feel better at first and could gain a small amount of power but gives less flexibility and mobility as well as the possibility of leading to

IAITO

The Iaito is another type of practice sword used in Iaido. The blade is stainless steel and is a replica of the Shinken, which is a live blade. The Iaito is often used by beginners as it is much safer. The advantages of the Iaito against the Bokken is that the scabbard can be used in practice.

KUBOTAN

The inventor of the original kubotan
keychain is Grand Master Takayu Kubota.
The kubotan today comes in many shapes and forms and is used world wide in more than 40 countries by law enforcement's.
You will notice the kubotan has a key ring attached to the end, your keys and key ring should be attached to this making a double ring which will allow much greater

movement of the keys. The kubotan could be held by the keys using the kubotan to strike with, or held by the kubotan itself , using the keys for striking. There are many different ways of striking with the kubotan, the end of the kubotan could be used to strike vunerable areas such as the eyes, throat, ribs, etc. or the side could be used to help apply pressure to form a wrist lock for example. If holding the kubotan and using the keys to strike with, a downward swipe to the nose or sideward swipe to the face could be used.

NUNCHAKU

The nunchaku is probably the most heard off martial arts weapon today, made popular by the late Bruce Lee.
The nunchaku is a very powerful weapon requiring great skill and power to master it. The nunchaku is said to have first beenused in the 17th century by the people of Okinawa, they were forbidden to use any weapons such as knives, swords and spears by invading Japan. To protect themselves, family and

land the people of Okinawa turned every day objects into weapons. The rice frail, two sticks joined together by a cord were used to knock rice of the plants in the paddy fields, this was to become an improvised weapon called a nunchaku.Today the nunchaku comes in many sizes, usually between 8 - 12 inch and can be attached by either cord or chains.

In many countries the nunchaku are illegal and should only be carried by people with a martial arts license, and only then they should be in a closed bag out of site to be carried to the place of training and back

SUI SO GEE

The siu so gee is very similar to the nunchaku, except one stick is shorter than the other, it is also known as the "little sweeper".
The sui so gee is a Chinese weapon and the legend as how it was first used goes like this. A unknown kung Fu instructor broke one of his favorite sticks he used for fighting. This stick was his favorite weapon, he was so attached to this stick that he continued to use it and developed it into the siu so gee.

THREE SECTION STAFF

The three section staff is usually 9ft. (2.75m.) long. It is a very effective weapon for both long and short range .In close quarter situations as well as being used for the obvious strikes it was often used for choking and hooking other weapons to disarm a attacker. In long range combat situations it was proved to be particularly useful against cavalry on the battlefield.

THROWING STAR

The throwing star also known as a shuriken, it is probably the most popular weapon people relate to ninjutsu. The shuriken is an important ninja tool but is not meant to be a deadly weapon, instead it is mainly used to distract an opponent. To distract an opponent it could be used to bridge the gap, for example if the ninja wanted to get close to his attacker he would throw a shuriken in the way someone might throw a shuriken in the way someone

might throw sand in some ones eyes to gain a split second to enable an attack, or maybe for an escape plan.

The shuriken was normally carried in concealed pouches of seven, they were tossed both under hand and over hand at short distances of about several meters. When throwing the shuriken the wrist is snapped into a straight line with the wrist and forearm. Sometimes the shuriken would be held in the fist and the sharp edges would protrude through the knuckles enabling the ninja to scratch the opponent. Often the shuriken was left to go rusty so as to cause infection to the scratches.

YAWARA

The Yawara is probably the original Kubotan before a key ring was attached to one end of it.
The original Yawara consisted of a hard piece of wood, usually white oak between six to eight inches long. It was often found with eight sides to enable a better grip but is not unknown to be rounded, also sometimes the ends would be pointed but again it was not uncommon to be found rounded.
