ROLE - Application Developer.

APPLICATIONS - The re-engineering of the Statements Production and of the Data Outputs as part of the overall Branches On-Line Processing system (BOLP) re-engineering.

EXPERIENCE

  1. Investigated the effects of the removal of redundant functionality from the main file update, and on the relocation of other function to a less critical part of the system.
  2. Produced an Impact Analysis on the removal of function, which was used as input to the Define Reports
  3. Writing Component Design documents for the modules to be amended.
  4. Modifying and unit testing the modules to be re-engineered using Assembler and PL/1.
  5. System testing using the in-house repertoire of testing tools.

CLIENT - F I Group at South Wales Electricity, Cardiff, Wales. (SWALEC - now known as Hyder plc).

The outsourced 'Business as Usual' Systems Support Section of the newly privatised area electricity distributor.

ROLE - Analyst / Programmer.

COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT - IBM Mainframe MVS/ESA, JES2, CICS, ASSEMBLER, PL/1, TSO/PDF, ROSCOE, Librarian, IDEAL/DATACOM, DataQuery, VSAM, INFOMAN, EXPERT/ADVISOR,RMS.

APPLICATIONS - Quarterly Billing System, Direct Debits Automation, Consumer Information System.

EXPERIENCE

  1. Modifying a PL/1 program to meet the redesigned Code of Practice Letter, advising of the technical faults in the new design, and assisting the user in the second redesign.
  2. Modifying the Quarterly Billing System to correct a known error. This entailed modifying and testing a large assembler batch program.
  3. Modifying Consumer Information System to eliminate incurring penalty the payments if appointments were arranged on completed jobs. Some 8 CICS/Assembler programs were affected, together with a number of BMS maps.
  4. Taking over a partially written Direct Debits Automation sub-system, which is required to accept electronically, a file of DDR mandate changes and apply them to the IDEAL/DATACOM database. Coordinating the efforts of the DDR Section, the Telecomms Operations Section as well as the electronic banking arm of SWALEC's bankers, was also required.
  5. Providing rota cover for early and late periods to meet FI Group's commitment to maintain site presence from 08:00 to 18:00, Mondays to Fridays. INFOMAN and EXPERT/ADVISOR (and later RMS) were used for problem notification and management.
  6. Attended a half-day seminar on the Electricity Supply Deregulation.
  7. Updating a number of PL/1 and Assembler programs for the deregulation project, including the program documentation.
  8. Massaging the existing software to support a campaign to encourage customers to pay by direct debits.

APPLICATIONS - The Output System for personalised printing of mailing and other marketing communications.

EXPERIENCE

Responsible for maintaining and supporting the existing largely Assembler written Output Personalisation System. The system consists of a number of PL/1 driver routines and 77 Assembler modules; it's overall function is to produce the highly personalised output which is a characteristic of the client, in a format for output via high speed laser page printers. It runs as part of regular promotions, and also as part of the business critical Billing System. Specific responsibilities included:

  1. Developing an understanding of the system after a minimal handover period.
  2. Providing a troubleshooting service to the user department. There are always many features which either do not function correctly or when used in a newly innovative way, require modifying.
  3. An 'on-call' service, which includes responding to urgent requests by mobile phone, and PC/modem link from home, particularly where the Billing System was involved
  4. Adding enhancements such as specialised barcode printing facilities, and a new method of showing the prize draw numbers.
  5. Modifying and integrating the Output System in the changeover to partitioned datasets from LIBRARIAN.
  6. Integrating the system with new Nipson and Siemens high speed laser printers.
  7. Adding a feature to allow the user to produce a single record of personalised data per customer.
  8. Using CONNECT:DIRECT and REXX. a feature was added to transmit the output to a printshop network containing a back-end page layout processor (PReS).

EXPERIENCE

  1. Design and composition of customised documents, leaflets and letters for use during elections and as press releases. The composition of these documents included shaping and sizing logos, as well as the statutory imprint.
  2. Technical support for the Membership and Electoral Roll systems was also provided.
  3. Additionally, the twin abilities to think on one's feet and rapid situation assessment were honed considerably.
  4. This was a part-time private venture.

APPLICATIONS -

  1. CMG's Community Charge and National Non-domestic Rates Package.
  2. CMG's Council Tax Benefit Package.

EXPERIENCE - Responsible for maintaining and supporting the existing CMG supplied multiple VSAM Community Charge and Non-Domestic Rates system, while the permanent staff designed and implemented the new Council Tax system. Specific responsibilities included:

  1. Analysis, design, programming, testing and implementing to meet the ad hoc requirements for recovery information, incorporating the Benefits System data as required.
  2. Testing and applying new releases of the proprietary software in close liaison with the user and Computer Operations. This included modifications due to national budget changes.
  3. Managing the Business rates amendment billing, annual billing for 1993-94, and annual rollover of the combined system.
  4. Liaison with CMG as required.

Responsible also for supporting the testing and implementation of the Council Tax Benefits system to maintain a set schedule during absence of permanent staff.

EXPERIENCE - This was a short term project to install and test newly delivered hardware and software, together with the necessary tailoring.


February 1990 - April 1991

CLIENT - West Dorset Health Authority, Dorchester, Dorset, England

The Community Hospitals & Services Unit of this branch of the British National Health Service.

ROLE - Consultant.

COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT - IBM PC Compatible, MSDOS 3.3, dBASE III+, dBASE IV, various PC-based tools.

APPLICATIONS - Continence Database System.

EXPERIENCE - The task was to modify an existing Continence Database System, (made available by another Health Authority), to meet the requirements of West Dorset Continence Advisory Service.

This entailed enlarging the dBASE III design and therefore upgrading it to dBASE IV, as well as ensuring the correct operation of the supporting screens, reports and menus.

A hardware specification was also prepared, to allow the authority's management to choose between procuring new equipment or utilising any surplus machines.

The project was a part-time private venture and was done on an offsite basis. With the appearance on the market of a dBASE IV package from another supplier, however, the project was put on ice.

ROLE - Technical & General Analyst, Mainframe Systems.

COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT - IBM 3090MP Bureau Operation at Citibank Savings, London. IBM PC & compatibles. MVS/XA, JES2, CICS, TSO/ISPF-DIALOG, Assembler, VSAM, PL/1, INFOMAN, ALMS, SAS, RMF, MSDOS, PCL, IRMA

APPLICATIONS - International Authorisations and Charge Interchange Systems.

EXPERIENCE - Responsible for maintaining and supporting the operation of the existing mainframe systems while the organisation's permanent staff converted and installed those systems on the STRATUS fault tolerant hardware.

  1. Modifying and testing batch and CICS programs in PL/1, Assembler, and SAS.
  2. Ensuring the correct operation of the daily batch Charge Interchange, and where technical intervention was required, advising the franchises of their rejections.
  3. Liaising with operations management at the Citibank Savings bureau on problems (including use of the INFOMAN problem reporting package), and non-routine requirements.
  4. Investigating inquiries from the national franchises and communicating the results by telephone, telex & fax. This included network problems.
  5. Adding new franchises, and updating the status of existing ones. This included testing with them and coordinating the relevant changes.
  6. Designing and implementing a small sub-system to manage the transfer of interchange data to and from the mainframe for franchises using diskette rather than tape. The IBM PC program was written in PCL under MSDOS, and utilised IRMA.
