Ezine
Announcement Lists
Submitting your ezine to each of the directories is a painstaking
and time-consuming task. But very important, hence mandatory. There
is another technique though, that is slightly simpler and generates
a sharp burst of new subscribers - making an announcement on ezine
mailing lists.
Why do
it?
- It is a relatively
simple way to get a batch of new subscribers for your ezine.
- Additionally, announcements
are archived on the list's web site so you'll receive some extra
exposure.

How to
do it?
Ezine announcements are one-time efforts. This means you have just
one chance to do it right. Mess it up, and you've lost a golden
chance to grow your list. So here are some guidelines to prepare
an announcement.
- Describe your ezine
- its primary purpose, its target audience, the structure you
intend to follow, the frequency of distribution (daily, weekly,
monthly and so on), its cost, nature of content (short articles,
quotes, Q&As).
- State your USP (Unique
Selling Proposition) - What makes your ezine special? Does it
deal with a specific niche topic? Is the content 100% original?
Can it help improve health, wealth or mind? If there's something
at which your ezine beats the field, say so! Caution: Don't
overdo or hype it!!
- Provide a sample issue
- For those hard-boiled skeptics who like to look before they
leap, show a sample of your stuff. Mention the URL of your website
where previous issues are archived. Or have one back-issue available
by email request from an autoresponder.
- Publish testimonials
- Have your ezine subscribers said something nice about it?
Add the testimonial to your announcement. Be brief, though.
Use short sweet quotes from reader feedback. Also, take care
to get the author's permission to use that comment.
- Give instructions
to subscribe to your ezine. Make sure they work. You don't want
people clicking on your link and end up nowhere. And provide
different options to sign up. At the very least, give them
- a webpage to go
to and register and,
- an email address
to send a "SUBSCRIBE" request to.
If you announce only
a web address, you'll lose those potential subscribers who
are simply too lazy to fire up their browser and surf into
your website.
- Be brief. Use short,
simple, sweet sentences. Read other announcements on the list.
See which ones attract you. Try and identify the strong points
on these. And use them in your own announcement.
- Format your posting.
Though basic, this is often ignored. A poorly formatted announcement
is a reflection on your ezine's quality. Use 65 characters per
line. Try and use bulleted lists to make your point.

The NEW List has over 10,000 subscribers. All of them have requested
to read announcements about newly launched ezines. The NEW List
is one of the best lead generating avenues to promote your ezine.
Some ezines have reported a dramatic increase of readership - between
20 and 200 new subscribers - following an announcement on New List.

In the body of the message, type: subscribe new-list YourFirstName
YourLastName
As a follow up to the initial subscription request you send to the
Listserver, you'll receive a confirmation message. As the instructions
will tell you, all you need to do is hit REPLY and type: "ok" (without
the quotation marks) in the body of the message. Don't include any
other text. Disable your signature file in your email program.
Once subscribed, you
might want to wait until you receive some postings of other announcements
from the list until you get a feel for the format.
Recently, there has been
a modification in the submission process - all new announcements
should be made through a form on the website.
Visit: http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/index.html,
click "NEW-LIST", then click "Submit Resource".
This takes you to a page
with the form. Filling it out and pressing "Submit" will
send the information to the moderator. When he approves your post,
it will be distributed to the list, circulation 10,000+.
Here'a tip. If you've
already announced your email publication to New-List in the past,
you can use it again to announce CHANGES to your list, such as
a change in the frequency of publication from, for example, monthly
to bi-monthly.
