So you want to start your
own ezine. Great. You now need to ask yourself some questions and
come up with firm answers.
- What are you good at?
- Whom are you aiming
your ezine at?
- What is the purpose
behind creating your ezine?
Without definite goals or targets, your ezine will flounder and drift.
With a firm objective and a concrete game plan, you can soon be in
the big leagues.
What are
you good at?
Nothing? Think again. Everyone has something they love, which they
know well and enjoy doing, which is a hobby or a passion. It may be
something as technical as writing smart Java applets for websites.
Or it may be a more emotional issue like raising children with special
needs. Or it might be mundane (peeling potatoes), esoteric (searching
for creatures in outer space) or romantic (choosing honeymoon spots).
| Find a topic that's
your passion. |
Whatever. I strongly advice you to choose a topic for your ezine that
you are PASSIONATE about, which you ENJOY writing or talking about.
I don't mean you need to
be an EXPERT (though being one would be great). You don't even need
to know a lot about it. You simply need to be enthusiastic about
it. That positive energy will convey itself to your readers, get
them involved and interactive, giving your ezine a spirit and life
of its own.
So think long and hard
before fixing on a subject for your ezine.
Whom are you aiming
your ezine at?
It always helps to define your target audience. This will determine:
- the content of your
ezine, which will be tailored to meet their needs.
- your marketing efforts,
to get your ad or announcement in front of them.
- the products or services
you will offer through your ezine.
| Be as specific
as possible. |
Try and be as specific as possible. It is best to write down the characteristics
of your intended audience. What interests do they share? How old are
they? Where do they live? How much do they earn? Spend? On what items?
As an example, take my
own ezine, Dr. Mani's The Heart Beat Healthzine. It is targeted
at persons with heart disease, or those seeking to prevent heart
disease. Most of them are over 50; the majority are male; some have
had heart attacks or surgery. The overwhelming majority are looking
for help in controlling or reversing their condition.
The content of my ezine
reflects this fact. My marketing efforts are limited to websites
and ezines related to Health and Fitness. Advertisers who are looking
to reach this population place ads in my ezine.
What is your ezine's
purpose?
This is perhaps the most important question to answer.
| Define your most
desired target response, or two. |
Is your ezine a vehicle to advertise your own business to readers?
Is it a way to bring them to your website, or request your brochure,
or contact you by phone or fax or email? Is it to announce new additions
to your site, or special offers and discounts, or a new product launch?
Do you want to instruct and educate (articles, news updates), entertain
(jokes, riddles), inspire (quotes, advice) or sell (products, services)?
Your ezine may wish to
do any or all of these. Or even NONE! Yes, your ezine still has
a purpose - BRANDING. By periodically bringing your company's name
in front of your customer, you achieve mind-share, which may translate
into future business.
Whatever you choose to
do with your ezine, define it before you begin. This will allow
easy and efficient tracking of the progress towards this goal over
time.
