I actually wanted to go to Alaska for the first time about 7 years ago, ever since I saw a beautiful photograph of one of its lakes whilst flicking through National Geographic sitting in the common room of my Sixth Form centre. It is probably the only place that I knew I would definately go to. Now, post-trip, I can safely say that it is a place that I will definately go back to as well.

Here at home I live in Kingston-Upon-Thames and have recently completed a degree in Law & Literature. After working for a year in London I stumbled across an advetisement for Sense's Alaskan Wilderness Challenge 2000 in the Financial Times and decided it was something I just had to do.

I do like to spend every opportunity I can in the great outdoors here in sunny England, particularly Wales and Cornwall. Failing that, the gym will suffice. I also enjoy creative writing and photography. Therefore, this trip seemed like an opportunity to experience all my favourite things rolled into one.

My task was to raise £2,250 to help the charity Sense.

I_bald_e.jpg - 5625 Bytes June 8th 2000 was my departure date. Due to the time difference however, June the Eighth seemed to last forever, the continuously renewing day, at least you arrive on the same day as you set out. I was really looking forward to 10 days working my way across lands of which I had only dreamed until this year. In addition to traversing the rugged, freezing, harsh terrain of Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, I would obviously be carrying enough survival kit to last the duration of the trek. After the trek came my week of independent travel around Alaska with my trekking pal, Linda.
