This site documents my experiences whilst visiting the splendid 'last frontier' in June 2000.You can see images from South Central, the Kenai Peninsula and the Interior. From Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Anchorage, Glennallen, Vadlez, Prince William Sound, Kenai Fjords National Park, Seward and Denali National Park - Mount McKinley. Wildlife, fauna, culture, people and landscapes that I had only ever dreamed of before getting involved in the Alaskan Wilderness Challenge 2000. The initial challenge was a week long trek in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in aid of Sense, the National Deafblind and Rubella Association.

Fourteen of us, aided by two St. Elias Alpine Guides, spent seven days and nights away from civilization surrounded by woodland, mountains, glaciers, bush and bog with only a thermarest and a stove for company. Not least was the challenge to exist in this wilderness but also to co-exist with our new found buddies. Following this week of intrepid exploration, I broke away from all of the group bar one to stay on for another week in order to sample some other areas of Alaska and the experiences they had to offer. I know many people I have spoken to about my trip truly recoil from the idea of spending any significant amount of time and distance away from a hairdryer, bed or toilet for example, let alone doing it 24 hours a day with a bunch of complete strangers. I must admit, it was the first time I had gone without make-up, regular ablutions and a variety of footwear and I loved it! The only thing I did hate however, was being sans-Marmite. Did you know that eating it helps to keep the mozzies away due its high content of B-vitamins? Very useful at Glennallen gas station.

Have a read of my SlogBook, which was written whilst I was out there, to get a better idea of what to expect should you ever find yourself in a similar situation. It is the abridged version but uncensored copies are available upon request (for a small fee).
