Boat Section

The marine section operates from a lake owned by the club near Thorpe which, subject to certain safety requirements, is open for boating 365 days a year.

Many different types of boat can be seen at the lake including steam, fast electric, i/c powered multi hulls and hydroplanes, scale, yachts, and submarines.

The club hosts national ranking races for fast electric, multi boats and hydroplanes each year and several club members are successful competitors at this and at international level.

However the main thrust of activity is free sailing of yachts, submarines and scale models, and light hearted fun racing amongst club members.

Club 500 Racing

The club has a large fleet of Club 500 electric racing boats. Club 500 is a nationally recognised single class competition which allows just one design of hull and running gear. No deviations are allowed resulting in very close, exciting racing and one can have a competitive boat for a very modest financial outlay. The complete kit costs less than £40 and only requires the addition of a servo, battery pack, speed controller and simple two channel radio.

Club Atlantor Racing

Club 500 racing has proved so popular that a similar format has been developed for I/C racing. A single design off shore racing style semi scale hull is powered by a side exhaust water cooled .61 cu in sports engine and tuned pipe burning 10% nitro fuel. All items required to complete the boat can be obtained through the club and this new class offers a relatively low cost way into the exciting world of model powerboat racing.

Racing normally takes place on the second and fourth Sundays of each month and interested visitors are welcome to come and meet club members and see the facilities for themselves.
