CHURCH GIFTS

The Bulmers were liberal, in their Gifts, to the Abbeys in Yorkshire.

Bertram de Bulmer founded Marton Abbey, situated in the district called Galtres, about six miles from Easingwold, temp. King Stephen. It is supposed that he was prompted to build it by the pious persuasion of his wife.

The Priory was dedicated to St Mary; and it was one of the Order of Augustine Friars. There are no remains of the old buildings, only a farmhouse, erected with part of the stone thereof, situated near the mill, and called the Abbey Mill. The place where the Priory stood is yet distinct enough, and the moat about it is still to be traced.

Bertram de Bulmer gave the Priory, 30 acres of land in Burnsall and Thorpe, with pasture, in the game district for sheep, and 30 cows, which Henry Nevill, his Grandson, conferred.

Among the Priors of Marton was William de Bulmer, Sub-Prior of Newburgh in 1287.

On February 9th 1536, the Priory was surrendered by Thomas Godson and 15 Canons; and was valued at £183.2s.4d. according to Speed. The Coat of Arms used by the Priory was that of its founder.

Stephen de Bulmer gave 24 acres in Ayton Magna, in Cleveland, to Whitby Abbey.

Bertram de Bulmer gave "Balschawe" to the Abbey of Byland which Robert Nevill, Lord of Raskelfe, confirmed as Lord of the Fee.

Bertram de Bulmer gave one Carucate of land at Wellburne, to Rievaulx Abbey.
