THE BULMER PEDIGREE Burke's "Dormant and Extinct Peerage" and Nicholas' "Historic Peerage" We will now take Burke's "Dormant and Extinct Peerage", confirming the names of the early Barons, by Nicholas' "Historic Peerage". The Ancestor, here is Henry Bulmer, lord of Bulmer and Brancepeth whose son was Alan de Bulmer, living temp. Henry I. His eldest son was Bertram de Bulmer, lord of Bulmer and Brancepeth, whose only daughter and heiress, Emma, married Robert, Lord Nevill of Raby. Alan had another son, Anketell (also called Aschitel), lord of Hutton, Co. York. He gave twelve oxgangs of land, at Bramham, to the Canons of Nostell Priory. A son of Alan was named Alphonsus. Anketell married a daughter of Sir Henry Seabridge, Knt., and had issue Bertram de Bulmer, first Baron by tenure, He was styled the "King's Baron". He was lord of Brancepeth and Sheriff-Hutton, the castle of which was built by him in 1140. He is said to be the one who founded Marton Abbey or Priory. He was succeeded by Stephen de Bulmer second baron by tenure living in 1167. He, upon aid being levied in 12 Henry II, towards the Marriage Portion of that Monarch's daughter, certified his knight's fee to amount to six and three quarters. His son and heir was Thomas de Bulmer, third Baron. He in 1172, paid one hundred shillings Scutage for not joining, the Expedition, then made into Ireland. His successor was Robert de Bulmer, probably a brother, fourth baron, by tenure, living in 1280, and was succeeded by Bertram de Bulmer, possibly another brother of Robert. He was fifth baron. His only daughter and heir Emma, married Geoffrey de Nevill, who became lord of Brancepeth and Sheriff-Hutton. Burke here, says that "The male line of the original House of Bulmer thus failing, the next of the name met with is John de Bulmer, sixth baron by tenure who married Theophania, daughter and co-heir of the Baron de Morwic"; and then he continues the line for three generations. This John de Bulmer springs from the younger branch who were lords of Wilton. To view the pedigree in GEDCOM format click here To view the pedigree click here To download the GNO file click here
