THE BULMER PEDIGREE

Hutchinson's "History of Durham", Graves' "History of Cleveland" and Ord's "History of Cleveland"

There is a Bulmer Pedigree in Hutchinson's "History of Durham"; and one in Graves' "History of Cleveland", concerning which the Author says that "his pedigree differs from that given in Dugdale's "Baronage", and is compiled from Gyll's MSS., Glover's Visitations, and other authorities. Respecting the pedigree in Ord's "History of Cleveland", it was compiled from MSS. in possession of Sir Thomas Phillips, Bart., F.S.A. it is confirmed, in many instances, by Graves in his tree, and is continued from the ancestor, Henry de Bulmer, 1066, to Sir John Bulmer of Wilton who was Attainted.

It begins thus: - Henry de Bulmer, living in 1066, had a son and heir, Alan de Bulmer, who married the daughter of ---- Powther. His son was Anketell, 1iving 1131 (Rot Pipae), who, according to Beckwith's MSS., "gave twelve oxgangs of land at Bramham, to the Canons of Nostell Priory". He had issue, Bertram, Ankatellus, and Alphonsus. Bertram built Sheriff-Hutton Castle, and married the daughter of Sir John Surtees, Knt. He had issue Emma, daughter and heir, who married Geoffrey Nevill of Raby, and died in 1194, and had three sons, Bertram, Richard, and John. Bertram de Bulmer founded Marton Abbey, and married a daughter of ---- Fitz-Henry, and had issue Roger de Bulmer, who married a daughter of Sir John Aldborough; and Ralph .and John. The Line afterwards continued through three generations of Ralphs, whom we find in most of the later Pedigrees.
