HISTORICAL NOTES of the BARONIAL HOUSE OF BULMER and ITS DESCENDANTS - AD 1042 TO 1750 Preface These Memorials are the result of an attempt to collect all available information respecting an ancient, and, once powerful family, who, through a long course of ages, held a foremost place amongst the nobility and territorial magnates of the counties of Durham and Yorkshire. Existing at a period, anterior to the Norman Conquest, they became Peers of Parliament, held high commands in the Scottish wars, were munificent supporters of their religion, and sufferers in its cause, until, through misfortune the result of uncontrollable circumstances, and in some instances, want of prudence in individual members, they disappeared from the ranks of the titled and landed classes. Their history, as here presented, extending over several centuries, exhibits a marked instance of the mutation of family fortune. |
