Mr. and Mrs. Bayne Dalgleish

From 1750, the owners of Dura Estate were the Baynes. John Anderson acknowledged their assistance and interest in the excavations. The fossil fish Diplopterus dalgleisiensis was named in their honour. They were also recognised by the Literary and Philosophical Society of St. Andrews. The Minutes of the Society (1861) stated: "Dr. Heddle proposed as Honorary members of the Society. Mr. & Mrs. Bayne Dalgleish of Dura, Alex. Thoms Esq. of Rumgay, and Alex Bethune Esq. [family at Blebo Estate since 1649] on account of the services rendered by them to the society in permitting, and in various ways facilitating the excavations recently undertaken by the society at Dura Den for the purpose of procuring fossil fishes for the Museum. This motion was seconded by Sir Charles M Ochterlony and unanimously adopted by the society."

Thus, Mrs. Dalgleish became the first female member of the society.
