(1785 - 1857)
Fleming was educated in theology and served as a minister in Shetland, Flisk in Fife, and Clackmannan. He also pursued scientific interests, writing widely on zoology and geology. His Philosophy of Zoology (1822) made an impression on Charles Darwin who agreed with many of his theories. While at Flisk, Fleming made some of the earliest studies of fossil fish scales from Drumdryan and Clashbennie, and was later a frequent explorer of Dura Den. He became professor of Natural Philosophy at King’s College, Aberdeen, and then professor of Natural History at Free Church College, Edinburgh, where he built up the museums teaching collections. Fleming and Anderson had their differences due to various misunderstandings and omitting to acknowledge each other’s work.
