From a letter dated 5th March 1903 at "Knelle" Beckley, from Tom Ballard to Joe and Sallie (his sister Sarah and her husband Joseph Caffyn) "No we cannot get to hear of a situation yet. I have answered several advertisements but with no success this month. We are advertising again, do hope something will come of it. We try the Ashford paper as that is the most local and well known. Does Joe think we should do better with some other paper. We are all well in health but 15/- (75p unemployment benefit) a week is not enough for us all to live on, to say nothing of clothes etc. I must try and get something better. Lottie (his eldest sister Charlotte) was very kind in keeping us posted up while they were all so poorly. I had a letter from John the other day, he says mother seems very feeble (she died in December). I occassionally get up to Sandhurst for a service. I want to try and do so next Sunday in the hopes of Bess (sister Nurse Bessie). Horace and Gertrude (sister and husband Horace Ballard) seem to have quite made up their mind to go abroad. I should like to go to Canada but dont expect I shall ever get the chance. I think ther would be a better opening for our five boys out there. South Africa I dont think much of. Mrs. Cooper doesnt like the idea of loosing Gertrude at all. I dont know when they talk of starting....."
Another letter dated 26th July 1903 from Charlotte Ballard (Ebenezer's wife) at Bartley Mill Cottage, to her daughter Sarah "I have had another letter from Tom, he has left the prairie, he was a week there and did not see a creature. He says he is well and is on the railway at work. His master is superintendant of the Sunday School there. Father has written to him asking to look to Tom a bit if he should be ill......"
From a letter written by Charlotte Ballard to her daughter Sarah Caffyn dated 1st October 1903, she mentions that Frannie and her family left here yesterday, her mother went with them to Robertsbridge (railway station). She had received a card from Frannie (Frances Ballard) this morning (1st Oct 1903), to tell her her brother Davis Cooper met them at Cannon Street station and took them to Euston station and was going on with them to Liverpool. That will be a help to her to see her on board with her luggage. She had Ð1.3s.0d excess to pay on that. She had a nice lot of useful things....."
