* France's women are achieving at least as well as men in education.
* There are more and more women in position of authority.
* However compared to other countries, France is unable to say that women have achieved proper representation in all areas.
* Let's not forget that France is a Latin country. Men (and women sometimes) see the gender roles as being different (Feminism is an intellectual movement, not a ground roots movement.
* In any case, even if politicians encourage more and more women into politics, women are making their own way in industries.
* Numerous Grandes Ecoles are still predominantly male, women are barred access to top jobs…
* The reality of women fighting to gain respect in the workplace can be observed through the study of sexual harassment cases. The only law protecting women is the sexual harassment law (no stalking laws in France). This law is only 6 years old and is probably the least used. Statistics show that when women sue their employers in 90% of cases the lawsuit will be thrown out before any court is involved. Of the Minority who make it to the courts, most do not win the case. In the extremely rare cases when women win, they are awarded damages but the employer is not incarcerated, fined or anything else.
* France is the Orwellian society by excellence, some are less equal than others…
French may nominate more women 8/12/99 PARIS (AP) - The French Cabinet adopted draft legislation Wednesday designed to boost women's participation in public life by asking parties to put as many women as men on candidate rosters for elections. The legislation would cut government funding to parties that do not draft equal numbers of women and men as political candidates in local, regional and European elections. Parliament is expected to begin debating the measures in January. Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has appointed six women to Cabinet posts since his election in 1997. However, women make up only 10% of France's parliament, the lowest rate in Europe after Greece.
