LES ECOLES:
L'école primaire = Primary school
* Le CP = Year 2
* Cours elementaires (CE1/CE2) = Years 3/4
* Cours moyens (CM1/CM2)= Years 5/6
Le college = Yr 7/10 (NOT college!)
* La sixieme, la cinquieme, la quatrieme, la troisieme

At the end of year 10, I took my Brevet.
* Si la moyenne de l'année est inferieure a 10/20, l'éleve doit souvent redoubler.
If the year's average is inferior to 10/20 the student must often re-take the year.
Le Lycée (College)
* La seconde, La premiere, La terminale = Yr 11/12/13
* La filiere:The option choice (A= Art/ languages, S= Sciences…)
* Le Bac (Baccalauréat) = A Level
* Au Bac, il y a une douzaine de matieres. Les matieres choisies sont les plus importantes. Pour passer le Bac, la moyenne générale de toutes les matieres doit etre superieure a 10/20.
At the Bac, there are about 12 subjects. The subjects taken as options are the most important. To pass the Bac, the general average of all subjects must be superior to 10/20.
* Au Lycée on commence à 8heures du matin jusque 6 heures du soir.
In the lycee we start at 8 am and end the day at 6pm.

L'université
* Je vais à la Fac (part of university) ...Je vais à l'uni = I go to University
Les Grandes Ecoles
* Aller à une grande école, c'est suivre le chemin royal vers le succes!
Attending a 'Grande ecole' is to follow the royal path to success!
* Pour accéder à une grande école il faut passer un examen tres dur. Le Bac n'est pas une bonne préparation pour une grande école. Il faut donc aller a une ecole speciale pour preparer l'examen...c'est la 'Prépa' qui dure deux ans.
To go to a 'Grande ecole', one has to pass a very hard entrance exam. The Bac is not an adequate preparation for this exam. Therefore, one has to go to a special school to prepare for the exam… it's the 'prepa' which lasts two years.

* Le Bac est tres stressant pour les élèves car il faut reussir coute que coute. La pression est si grande qu'il y a un probleme de suicide.
The Bac is very stressing for students as they must succeeed at all costs. The pressure is such that there is a problem with suicide.

In France, teachers teach, that's all. There are no 'Head of year' or 'tutor'.
COMMENTAIRES ANGLAIS (FOR THOSE WHO REALLY WANT A TOP MARK!):
* Paris, Lyon, Marseilles school are faced with 'Anglo Saxon' problems where teaching seems to go towards incorporating a pastoral element. Teaching unions are against this so problems in difficult schools go unchecked, least experience teachers teach there.
* Religion has no right to be part of state schools. The rise of women / girls wearing the traditional Islamic veil forces the management of schools to think differently and to move away from Napoleonic ideals.
* French schools in suburbs are in crisis. They have always insisted that social problems are to remain outside the school gate.
* Social problems have burst the gates open and schools are not ready, or willing, to face up to them.
* Huge success rate at Bac level: 2nd in the world to Japan re mathematics
1st regarding literacy
* Bac an international model
* L'éducation doit etre un passeport vers le futur.
Education must be a passport to the future
* Le taux de chomage enorme met en cause la validité de ce passeport
Huge unemployment rate makes the validity of this passport doubtful
* The end of the 30 glorieuses however has meant that youngsters nowadays are not sure of employment in the future. Some rebel against a hard regimented system which does not promise anything anymore.
