* Paris, Lyon and Marseilles have huge suburbs and citee dortoires. * The rise of cheap lodgings for the destitute (HLM) has led to the creation of huge areas around main cities where the 'undesirable' where 'contained'. * New towns were built after the 2nd world war destruction with relative minimal thought given to social integration.
* This , added to the problems of unemployment, racism and the rise of the National Front of course has led to a number of riots in the 80s.
* Le Corbusier, famous French architect, introduced the new architecture with more than a social conscience, an actual social role.
* Its tower in Nantes which aimed to integrate cheap accommodation with all amenities of shopping and education in the same building turned out to be a social experimentation failure as it quickly became a no go area for the police because of the concentration of people and problems (drugs, violence, unemployment, theft…)
* Now Nantes has ripped away its old (poor) centre and has replaced it by modern buildings (banks, museums etc,,,) and the town looks all the better for it. However its poor inhabitants who previously had access to small jobs in the town have been moved out. Urbanisme in France is more cosmetic than social, le Corbusier is probably crying
