France and French people have always seen themselves as having an international role, whether at the state level (numerous peace conferences in Paris) or at the people level (Medecins sans frontieres etc…). The price of such a role, when the diplomacy is not up to scratch, is terrorism. When such terrorism happens, the Beauf Francais wonders if, once more, France's shoes are not bigger bigger than its feet…
France extradites Basque veteran (08/02/00) MADRID, Spain (AP) - Spanish police arrested a former leader of the violent Basque separatist group ETA Tuesday after he was extradited from France. Francisco Mugica Garmendia, from the Basque region of northern Spain, has already served prison time in France. But he also was wanted in Spain for his involvement with ETA and his alleged direct participation in at least 10 attacks on Spanish police and military targets. Mugica was arrested in 1992 in the French town of Bidart in one of the biggest crackdowns against the ETA leadership. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Nearly 800 people have been killed since ETA began fighting for independence for northern Spain's three Basque provinces in 1968.
McDonald's blast kills 1 in France (19/04/00) DINAN, France (AP) - A bomb ripped through a McDonald's near this town in Brittany Wednesday, killing an employee and ripping off part of the restaurant's roof, officials said. The blast exploded at the drive-through windows in the rear section of the McDonald's, located in a commercial complex near Dinan, in the Cotes d'Armor region in western France, rescue workers said. The head of France's special anti-terrorism judicial division, Irene Stoller, was en route to the scene, according to judicial officials in Paris. Suspicion immediately fell on a small separatist group, the Breton Revolutionary Army, blamed for an increasing number of attacks in recent months
McDonald's to help terror victims (24/04/00) PARIS (AP) - McDonald's said Monday it would donate $143,000 to a French group that aids terrorism victims and their families after one of its employees was killed in a bomb blast in northwestern France last week. In an interview with the daily Le Figaro, the chairman of McDonald's France, Denis Hennequin, described the bomb attack, which killed 28-year-old Laurence Turbec, as "an absurd crime." Turbec was killed last Wednesday when a bomb exploded at the drive-through windows in a McDonald's near Dinan, in the northwestern region of Brittany. McDonald's restaurants in France have been targeted previously by opponents of globalization.
Explosions damage French casinos (03/05/00) PARIS (AP) - Bombs ripped through two casinos in southern France early Wednesday, damaging property but injuring no one, police said. Another blast Wednesday near the Crazy Horse Saloon cabaret in Paris shattered shop, car and telephone booth windows and carved a crater into the sidewalk, police said. Nobody was injured in the explosion, which happened at about 3 a.m. and was caused by a grenade, police said. The Paris case has been referred to the police anti-terrorist squad. The blasts in southern France targeted the slot machine rooms of casinos in Juan-les-Pins and Carry-le-Rouet. Several weeks ago an explosion damaged a casino in the southern city of Aix-en-Provence. No one has claimed responsibility for the explosions
