Most adults experience unemployment at some stage in their lives. Being unemployed can be a terrible experience. It can cause stress if you are desperate for money. It can make you feel generally inadequate. Things are all the worse if you have a family to support, or have important financial commitments. How will you survive? This page is limited in terms of practical advice about how to get a job. However, hopefully some of the links to other sites and organisations might help you with ways of improving your chances of getting a job. What we are particularly aiming to do is to provide spiritual support, encouragement, and hope to anyone unemployed at the moment. You may feel desperate, lonely or worthless, or all three. On the other hand, you may be affected in fairly minor ways. Whatever the degree of affect, please feel at home here. Read this page, and any of the others listed on the side bar to the left which seem relevant to you and how you feel. Below there is a link to the articles page. Here we are making it possible for you to share your stories and articles with the world. Perhaps you want to write a theological article about unemployment, or a personal testimony about how God has helped you despite unemployment. Also, if you want to unburden yourself about your difficult situation in being unemployed, please do. Please take out any references which identify yourself or others, or any specific employer. Also, we hope you will find some comfort in the fact that we are praying for you, and that you are not alone in your situation. |

As we have said, unemployment causes two major problems. One of these is financial - you need a job for money in order to survive. The other is self-respect focussed. Many who do not have a job and do want one, can loose focus in life, and can lack a sense of purpose. One positive thing to do when you have spare time, possibly such as when you are seeking work, is to do something positive. This could be some type of voluntary work, or another initiative for God. Perhaps you could write some articles for this site, or set up your own targeted Christian web site. This voluntary work option might be most relevant to the long-term unemployed, who might have less likelihood of getting a job quickly. Having said all of this, I know from experience that it is very hard to work for God when you are either constantly filling in job application forms or in the midst of retraining. Finding Work It is well known that there are several major factors which relate to people’s likelihood of finding work. These include age, geographical location, the rate of unemployment and personal work skills and experience. If some or all of these factors are against you, then it can be very hard to find work. Currently the UK and the US have low unemployment rates for recent times, but this is no comfort to those who are unemployed. If you are finding it hard to get work, of course do your best to get any advice that you need from official advice centres and job centres. If you are being too restrictive, widen your imagination about what jobs you are going to apply for. Working for yourself Have you ever thought about setting up your own business? At the start of our comments, I want to warn readers to be very careful in this area. It is easy to get what seems to be a great business idea, and spend months of hard work and good money, to then see the idea get no where. You need to get advice from people you can trust, and be wise and humble about your chances of success in running your own business. This is not to discourage you; many do succeed. However, generally it may be much better to get a job and develop your ideas in your spare time, getting together the money and the research necessary to give the idea a chance. Please click here to get to the Business section of the site, which has got more information on setting up in business, and links to sources of help with this. Knowing the truth about God and Yourself A final few words about our relationship with God. Assuming you know God, I encourage you to pray and bring your worries and concerns to him. God can bring a sense of peace and hope, helping you to trust him no matter what happens. You are certainly not a Mr. Nobody. Nobody is a Mr. Nobody, because God loves everyone, even if they do not love him (John 3:16). Try to cultivate a greater understanding of how much God loves you, and cares about your situation. Allow this knowledge to become experience, as you reach out in faith and in prayer, and sense and see God with you in your life. |
