Charley Brown's
Charlie Brown's, the
famous tavern, was founded by Charles Brown who was born
in 1859 in Hardinge St, Commercial Rd. He had been a boxer and
then became the
owner of a baker's shop in Cable St.
In 1892 he was
landlord of the Railway Tavern. which stood at the corner of Garford
Street and 114-116 West India Dock Road.
He had two children. Ethel, who married
Tom Chandler, and they kept the pub after Charlie's death and a son,
another Charlie, who was the landlord of the Blue Posts. Both pubs were
then known as Charlie Brown's.
He became known as the
uncrowned king of Limehouse and the sailors friend. He
died in 1932. He was buried in Bow Cemetery.
