Isle of Dogs Canal
The Isle of
Dogs Canal, later named the City Canal, was built between
1802 and 1805. This crossed the Isle to the south of the
West India Dock. The intention was to save ships the
inconvenience of travelling around the Isle of Dogs. It
connected Limehouse and Blackwall and was Government
funded. Unfortunately it had not been foreseen that using
the locks and being towed through by teams of horses
would not save a great deal. The first ship to use it was
the Duchess of York, 500 tons.
In 1829 it
having been unprofitable it was sold to the West India
Dock Company for £120,121. 5s. 6d and made into a timber
dock. The Limehouse entrance to the City Canal was later
closed.
