The Great Place
In 1299 a parliament was held at the Great
Place and the Magna Carta was ratified by Edward I there
at the home of his friend Henry de Waley who was Lord Mayor
of London.
The place was called the Great Place and it
stood (where White Horse Lane and Salmon Lane join) near
St Dunstan's church on Stepney Green. Later Sir Henry
Colet lived there.
Sometime during the 17th
century the "Great Place" became Spring Gardens
Coffee House and in 1780 a pleasure resort, known as
Spring Gardens Coffee House existed to the west of Globe
Road.
