Thomas Jefferson, US President1801-09

The parents of this president were baptised in Shadwell.

His maternal grandfather, Isham Randolph, Virginia's Colonist Agent in London, married Jane Rogers at Whitechapel on the 25th of July 1717. Isham Randolph's family came from Northampton and later from Houghton Darva and Moreton Morell in Warwickshire.

The couple started their married life in his house at Shakespeares Walk, Shadwell and it was there their first child Jane Randolph was born. She was baptised on 20 Feb 1719/20 at St Paul's Church, Shadwell. In 1735 the family moved to Isham's plantation in Virginia.

Jane Randolph married Peter Jefferson on 3 October 1739 at Goochland co., VA. Peter had been baptised 29 February 1707/8. He owned a one thousand acre tract of land Albemarle County, Virginia and a house called 'Shadwell', the place where his wife had been baptised, was built in 1737. The couple had ten children. Their third son, Thomas Jefferson, who was to become one of America's Presidents, was born there in 1743. The house was destroyed by fire in 1770.
