US President1801-09 The parents of this
president were baptised in Shadwell.
His maternal
grandfather, Isham
Randolph, Virginia's Colonist
Agent in London, married Jane Rogers at
Whitechapel on the 25th of July 1717. Isham Randolph's
family came
from Northampton and later from Houghton Darva and
Moreton Morell in Warwickshire.
The couple started
their married life in his house at Shakespeares Walk,
Shadwell and it was there their first child Jane Randolph was born. She was baptised on 20 Feb
1719/20 at St Paul's Church, Shadwell. In 1735 the family
moved to Isham's plantation in Virginia.
Jane
Randolph married Peter Jefferson on 3 October 1739 at Goochland co.,
VA. Peter had been baptised 29
February 1707/8. He owned a one
thousand acre tract of land Albemarle County, Virginia
and a house called 'Shadwell', the place where his wife
had been baptised, was built in 1737. The couple had ten
children. Their third son, Thomas Jefferson,
who was to become one of America's Presidents, was born
there in 1743. The house was destroyed by fire in 1770.
