Limehouse

The name Limehouse (formerly Limehurst) comes
from the limeburning which went on in the area.

In 1867 there was a slump in ship building due to bad weather. People were destitute in Poplar and LImehouse and many ended up in the workhouse. There was considerable overcorowding in the area at this time.
