Macquarie Way
Lachlan MacQuarie (1761-1824) was
born on the isle of Ulva, off Mull. He joined the Black
Watch serving in North America, India and Egypt and was
appointed governor of New South Wales, Australia. He is
known as the 'Father of Australia' for his energetic
administration. The Lachlan and McQuarie rivers (and
Macquarie Island) are named after him.
Macquarie Way
is not named after Governor Macquarie but after a famous
sailing ship, which eventually became a training ship,
built at Blackwall in 1875. However she was on the East
India Dock to Melbourne service and so the ship was
probably named after him.
