Memorials of Stepney
edited by Hill and Frere

The Memorials of Stepney, edited by Hill and Frere, details the Vestry Minutes of St Dunstan for a number of years and names vicars, vestrymen, churchwardens and some parishioners (some- times the vestry minutes include their signatures or marks). From these records one can picture the parish growing from year to year. As the parish inhabitants increased and the area started thrive so it became necessary to have two churchwardens. Then sidesman to assist them until the area was divided into four areas each with its own church officers.

Amongst the timber merchants, pulley makers, carpenters, ships biscuit makers, tailers, ropemakers and fishmongers were merchants, ship builders, explorers and self made men of substance who had gained positions of power and influence. The minutes which tell of the problems dealt with by the vestry over the next century are interesting for both content and the details of those who attended the meetings.
