The Pett Family
Peter
Pett, was
master shipwright of the navy to Queen Mary. He was the
brother of Phineas
Pett of
Chatham. Churchwarden Pett appears in the State Papers in
1629: 'Peter Pett is a skilful and well-experienced
artisan in the building of ships, and of honest life and
good reputation.' He became master of the
Shipwright's Company in 1634-5 and was the inventor of
the type of ship known as a frigate. Samuel Pepys
mentions his names several times in his Diaries.
He died in 1652 and is buried at St Nicholas, Deptford.
His will dated 18 August 1651 shows he owned land at
Ratcliffe and Wapping and also mentions three sons and
two daughters. Peter, who was afterwards knighted;
William; Phineas; Elizabeth wife of Captain Robert Moulton and Mary. He also mentions
a brother William and sister Anne and there was another
brother, Joseph.
Another
member of the famous Pett family of shipbuilders also
attended the vestry. Peter Pett (1634-1647)
he was churchwarden for Ratcliffe in 1647) was the
grandson of Peter
Pett who died
in 1652. The Pett family owned several shipyards at
Limehouse.
