Stepney Registration Areas

When birth, marriage and death registrations first started in July of 1837 there were 5 registration areas in Stepney. These were Whitechapel, Stepney, St George in the East, Bethnal Green and Poplar.

Since then various area changes have taken place. The area shown below in blue is the name which appears in the General Registrar's Indexes. The names which follow are the districts which the registration area covered at a particular time.
