KING ALFRED BUSES RUNNING DAY |

Another Fantastic Day! |
| Plenty of buses and coaches to ride on all day with so much variety to choose from. Superb weather up to mid afternoon, even the damp end to the day added atmosphere for the photographers. There were more visitors than ever. It is difficult to put a number but many services ran with nearly full or full loads. The two OBs, the Daimler Utility and Crosville AEC Regal were very popular. The city tours were in demand, especially the open topper. These were only advertised on the day although the vehicle allocations appeared on the vehicle graph. For the first time some of the tours carried guides that pointed out places of interest on the way round. Every KAMS service operated as per timetable which is quite remarkable as the youngest bus is 36 years old. Towards the end of the day a few other services were lost. The Greenslades Reliance withdrew with a fuel leak. Roger Burdett's PS2 had electrical problems and missed its last service as did the Silver Star Atlantean with a problem with its prop shaft. The bolts holding it sheared just as it turned a corner at Middle Wallop. Luckily the bus was moving slowly and the prop shaft passes through a chassis member so no damage was done to the bus. FoKAB and the visiting bus crews enjoyed their the day and we hope you did too if you came. Thanks for coming if you did. Your support is much appreciated. __________________________________________________ |
From the FoKAB Chairman |
In the days that have passed since 1st January, we have had time to catch our breath and reflect on what a splendid occasion it was. A number of very complimentary comments have been made by our visitors in letters and emails to me and colleagues on the Running Day committee. Typical of the comments have been: “The day was run in a professional and efficient way with attention to detail: - crews uniforms, ticket issue, clear timetable and journeys into beautiful countryside; excellent as ever, thank you for organising it so efficiently; cheerful, helpful attitude of King Alfred and visiting ‘staff’; first class organisation; wonderful variety of buses and of course the FOKAB vehicles, plus meeting old friends – a very sociable day”. Many said that it was the best Running Day ever and the (mostly) kind weather undoubtedly helped. But the great deal of careful planning could only be implemented on the day through the efforts of everyone who worked so willingly. It is a credit that our little organisation is able to count on no fewer than 72 volunteers to come out and work on New Year’s Day. So a big “Thank you” from me and the committee to these FoKAB members for helping to make it such a successful day. We do indeed set a benchmark for other organisations to try and aspire to and we can be justifiably proud of that. Peter Murnaghan __________________________________________________ |

Buses & Coaches in Service Fifteen of the visiting buses and coaches entered had not appeared before at a King Alfred Buses Running Day. They ranged from a 1945 Huddersfield Daimler CWA6, a 1952 West Riding Leyland PS2, a Western Welsh AEC Reliance, a 1970 Southampton Corporation Atlantean to the latest and unique Solent Blue Line 2006 Volvo B7TL with Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 body. FoKAB has had Panther 419 back on the road for a few months after its engine rebuild but 417 did not appear this year even though its restoration is at a very advanced state. Static Display
The location of the display was again at INTECH, Winchester's hands-on interactive science and technology centre, by kind permission of The Hampshire Technology Centre Trust Ltd., a registered educational charity. INTECHs unique award winning building is located on Morn Hill, 2 miles from the centre of Winchester with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Access on running day is only by the special shuttle bus services from the Guildhall bus stop in the Broadway. We lost count of the number of buses and coaches that were part of the static display. Before the day we had 21 entered but many more turned up on the day and we ran out of room to accommodate them all! __________________________________________________ |

Other Events |
The Indoor Transport Bazaar selling books, photos, models and transport memorabilia, the Transport Bazaar was held in the Saxon Suite of the Guildhall and the St. Johns Rooms, both were right next to the bus terminal in the Broadway. The FoKAB Sales stand was busy all day in the bus station waiting room, Courtesy of Stagecoach in Hampshire. The Mid Hants Railway - The Watercress Line operated a two train service to Alton from Alresford. Free bus services from Winchester connected with most trains.
The Twyford Waterworks Trust opened the waterworks from 11.00am to 4.00pm. They reported they had 166 visitors and it was very good to see all the buses that came past them packed. A free bus service following part of Hampshire Bus route 93 stopped at the waterworks. Winchester City Mill had a busy day demonstrating of Flour Milling. Bob Goodwin the miller reported a successful day. Open for the first time on our running day was Hockley Mill. They reported that they had over 100 visitors, so they are very pleased. ________________________________________________ |
