Quarter Final

England v Brazil

Friday 21st June 2002 07.30 BST, Shizuoka

England 1 Brazil 2
Owen 23; Rivaldo 45, Ronaldinho 50

I spent 90 minutes thinking Brazil had a player called "Cleverson"!!!! Ah, the commentators try too hard to mystify with their pronounciations - although an excuse might be made for Trevor Brooking, who told us all that he was "tingling"!! Hopefully, I might be tingling tomorrow morning - but I certainly wasn't for this game.

it was all your fault, Dave - gotta face it!!

My instructions had been "please don't wake me" - but I woke up, without outside intervention, at 6.30 - so got the whole shebang, including Pele's views. That one of these teams Had To Win This Game, was a difficult one to come to terms with, but, the eulogizing of Scholes done me in - and I had to go for B*****. And so it was. England, in fairness, were very poor - Brazil, not much better. The game was "bubbly" without being ever exciting. Owen's goal came as a result of a mistake by the Brazilian Lucio. Rivalto's goal was "so-so" - Mopsy's winner, a fantastic shot, which Seaman will forever have nightmares about. Why Mopsy got sent off will remain a mystery. Why England didn't play for the final 25 minutes, will remain an even bigger mystery. Anyway, England are out and perhaps now the dippies next-door might remove the flags from their front window and the aerial of their car. I doubt they'll watch another match.

Rivalto did a couple feigning injury acts today. I just realised that Brazil might face Turkey in the semis. There's one to look forward to!
