Quarter Final
Senegal v Turkey
Saturday 22nd June 2002 12.30 BST, Osaka
Senegal 0 Turkey 1 AET
I am still not over the Spain result. There is just no getting away from it - they scored a golden goal; they won the game - yet they are on their way home. Leaves a very, very nasty taste in the mouth. FIFA have received 400,000 letters regarding Italy? Well, I reckon they can count on at least that amount again for Spain. Let's not forget that the USA were cheated too (the hans of god, the mirror is calling it!). OK, there's no point in harping on about it - but, grrrhh. (from onefootball.com) Spain losers rail at South Korea bias Saturday 22nd June 2002 Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas suggested referees were deliberately favouring South Korea after his side's penalty shoot-out defeat to the co-hosts. Egyptian referee Gamal Ghandour ruled out Ruben Baraja's second half effort for shirt-pulling and then chalked off Fernando Morientes' extra-time strike after incorrectly ruling that Joaquin had allowed the ball to go out of play before crossing it. South Korea went on to seal victory 5-3 in the shoot-out and Casillas was furious with what he viewed as preferential treatment for the co-hosts. "We've already seen this when South Korea played against the USA, Portugal and Italy," he blasted. And he was backed up by Spain coach Jose Antonio Camacho, who said: "Luck was not with us. I am sad as we fought hard for 120 minutes and lost unjustly. This isn't good for football. "We must leave when we clearly showed we were superior and that's what hurts more. It wasnīt a matter of luck but a matter of two legal goals the referee robbed us of. "Italy and Portugal suffered the same situation but I couldnīt ever have expected it would be so flagrant in the quarter-finals." Spain full-back Carles Puyol added: "We had the chance to do something big but somebody ended our dreams. Someone razored our big opportunity. We don't deserve what we are going through. "We knew beforehand that something like this could happen. Nobody wanted him to play the main role in the game, but he did and that is impossible to fight against." In addition to the two disallowed goals, Spain were twice pulled back for offside when clean through in the closing stages of extra-time by linesman Michael Ragoonath with television replays later showing the decisions to be incorrect. South Korea also had their fair share of good fortune against Italy in the second phase when Damiano Tommasi's extra-time strike was incorrectly ruled out for offside before Ahn Jung-hwan scored the winner. Casillas, who saved two spot kicks when his side beat the Republic of Ireland on penalties, could not hide his disappointment. He added: "Penalties are a lottery. We won last week and today we lost. "We've been dumped out without losing a match. Now we must wait another four years assuming we qualify for Germany 2006." | ||
