DAY 14 SUMMARY

Alston to Greenhead 18 miles. Very hot, in fact the hottest it has been for the whole of my life time, and the hottest day England had for 20 years -- 36 degrees centigrade in the shade. Unfortunately, this is the most exposed day on the walk and by far the most boring after leaving Alston. No shade what so ever for the whole walk. All the time you are in open fields and moor land. At last, after what seemed like hours, we got to the train track and the golf course which tells us there is only 0.5 miles to go. When we got to Greenhead, my Dad was not feeling well at all and went to bed for the whole evening, suffering from heat stroke.

A MORE DETAILED LOOK AT DAY 14

Can I miss this day out? All that there was to write about apart from plain green fields and rivers is roads. You leave Alston, which is the highest market town in England and properly in my view, the most beautiful one in England. After leaving Alstons boundaries you get your first and almost last view of the day. From there you can see all of Alston in one go, really an amazing sight.

On from there you come to Whitley Castle. This is not actually a castle, but it is an old Roman fort on the Roman Maiden Way. From there you are completely out in the open, no shade anywhere. Also just after the old fort you cross over the A689 for the first time out of four crossings. From here there is nothing to write about until you get to the first of the 2 small villages, Slaggyford and Knarsdale. Slaggyford has nothing in it apart from a shop and a mile later after following the road on a footpath just metre from it, so close to the road that you can hear, smell and see the cars on the road for most of the way to Knarsdale, and all that has is accommodation.

From there the Pennine way follows the old Maiden way that, I mentioned earlier, all the way to Greenhead. This path takes you over very open fields. If the weather is hot it is so easy to become dehydrated very quickly in hot weather. Even though this is very easy walking country, the pace will naturally be slow and very boring. This is the most boring day by a long way on the Pennine way.

The day finishes with a walk around the Gap Shield golf course. Greenhead is just down the road from there and is easy to get to.
