DAY 8 SUMMARY

An interesting day, but for some reason I found it rather hard. It was still very hot, as it has been all the time up to this point. Along the way today there was plently of interesting sights, especially with all of the sites of natural erosion to see, where water and limestone has come together and formed massive caverns, as well as only one climb of note over the day. We had our lunch near West Cam Road, 4 miles from Hawes. Unfortunately we are going to have to have a rest day tommorow as all the accommodation is completely booked up in Keld. However, we should have planned for this earlier as Keld is the point where the Coast to Coast meets up with the Pennine Way thus making it a very busy place in summer.

A MORE DETAILED LOOK AT DAY 8

From Horton-in-Ribblesdale the Pennine way leads you down a short distance of a rather busy road, before it turns off, heading towards the Birkwith Moor. Along this approach to the moor lots of pot holes can be found, that was made by natural erosion of the limestone by water. The most remarkable of such is one you are going to be walking past, Sell Gill Hole, which has openings on both sides of the footpath to form a natural bridge, has a pitch 150 ft (46m) high and has a large chamber said to be one of the largest in the Dales.

When you are on the moor the Pennine way leads you towards Old Ing that dates back to a least the 16th century. About 1 mile on from Old Ing you come to a lovely stone bridge that is called Ling Gill bridge. The Bridge as got a message on it that is in it's is 230 years old. It reads

ANNO 1765 THIS BRIDGE WAS REPAIRED AT THE CHARGE OF THE WHOLE WEST RIDELING.

From the Bridge the Pennine way rises slowly over a few miles to the Cam High Road, which you will be on for the rest of the day's journeys. If you don't know about the ancient road you could be forgiven to begin to think that it is a long farm track. When the track nears Kidhow Gate you can safely say, that for the next 4 miles the route is going to be all down hill, no up hill or flat. After a while, as Fountain Fell was yesterday this track can get a bit boring, but if you do just keep going, when you get to Hawes, you will forget all this as the town is large with lots of shops and Pubs, an ideal place to unwind in the evening. The people in Hawes has quite a choose of pub to go to, and so have you if your interested as there is 5 Pubs in a row on the high street. At the edge of the town just after the road to the Youth Hostel there is another road that leads you to Hawes Creamery, where they make Wensleydale Cheese. Y.H.A Members get in at a discount price.
