The "Single" Name

Titterington and Titherington are the dominant modern day versions of a name that has had a host of versions dating from the days when illiterate farm workers spoke their name and the parish priest wrote it down as best he could in the church register of baptisms, marriages or burials. The International Genealogical Index groups these two versions with many others ( 97 and counting... ) under the Titterington banner.

The name has been registered with the Guild of One Name Studies. The versions Titterington, Titherington, Tidderington, Tittrington Tetterington and Tytterington have been registered, but there are many more which are close phonetically.

Other members of the Guild are studying Titterton (Tetryngton, Teturton, Tidderton) and Tittensor (Titensor, Tittenson, Tittensor, Titson, Titsor)

There is also a website for the Tissington family. They trace their ancestry back to the same area of Cheshire around Prestbury and Tytherington, as the Titteringtons and Titheringtons. Indeed, they see Titterington as a spelling variant of their family name. Their line is via Jordan de Titherington 1250 on the Book of Rolls and thence to Edward Tissington on the Yorkshire Poll Tax returns of 1379.
