Titterington Trail - Tues 6 April 2010 - Information

Overview

This year we plan to follow in the footsteps of the Titterington families who, by relatively small stages, moved from Waddington in the 17th century across to Gisburn and thence to Colne, Halifax and Leeds. Our journey starts at the parish church of St Mary at Newchurch in Pendle where we gather to view the Church which has hosted many Titterington baptisms, marriages and burials. We then move across to Luddenden via a route allowing many sites of family interest to be viewed.

Luddenden itself is of special interest since there are many Titterington gravestones in the Churchyard there. The family of 'Thomas the Stuffmaker' made good in this area, as they worked hard in the worsted cloth trade. We are hoping to be able to view the interior of the Chuch there, as well as visiting the adjacent cemetery.
The sandwiches and chips that were so popular on TT1 (five years ago now) will be provided at the Lord Nelson Inn before we move down into Halifax to see the Piece Hall and the Minster which also has family connections.
We have hired a room at the Minster to round off the afternoon with family trees on view, relatives you never knew you had to be greeted and finally coffee or tea plus cakes. In the evening there will be an informal social gathering at Ring o'Bells for those who would like to stay on and socialise more with other members of the Titterington clan.

Cost

The cost of the day is £10 for adults and £6 for children. This covers the hire of the room at the Minster, a buffet lunch and coffee/tea at the Lord Nelson and finally tea and cakes at the end of the afternoon.
This sum will be collected on the day but we must know that you intend to come so that we can advise the caterers of numbers.
Please ring Alan Titterington on 01484 712104 to add the names of your party to the list of attendees. Alan's mobile number is 07810 202590 and his E-Mail address is: alantitterington@ and after the @ please add: yahoo.co.uk (this is an anti spambot measure)

Directions to St Mary's Newchurch in Pendle

In broad brush terms, take the M65 to junction 12, then head down the A56 towards Burnley but only go as far as Brierfield where you should turn right for the station, go over the level crossing and carry on to Fence. By now Pendle Hill will be looming up in front, so head for the right hand end of the hill and pick up signs for Newchurch in Pendle.
Parking is not easy in Newchurch, so give yourself time to park and walk back to the Church

Accommodation

Since the afternoon and evening will be spent in and around Halifax, this is the obvious place to stay overnight.
There is a Travelodge at the old Crossley carpets factory site which was offering rooms for £19 per night at the beginning of March. Click here
