That last message is absolutely spot on....absolutely no tangible publicity/PR/marketing work seems to get done on behalf of the club. To be perfectly fair, however, maybe the (lest we forget,part-time) commitee just do not have the time to target and address this 'problem'......is there anything more positive that could be done by the terrace, rather than directing criticism constantly towards the much maligned comittee? Suggestions could begin with assuring any would-be returnees from Dens/Tannadice/Pittodrie/Ibrox/Celtic Park/Saturday amateurs that the fare on offer at the Gayf is truly worth the tenner, and that the up & coming youngsters are a real reason to be proud of the club, and that NOBODY at Gayfield will get on their high-horses criticising the 'Johnny-come-latelys' etc. (where ARE those c.1993 'beardies' now, anyway? has the novelty gone?)

I always suspected that, regardless of success, AFC's home gate would saturate at 1500......I hope that between now and the end of the season, I can be proven wrong. And another thing.....those that were seen gaining entry by means of scamming a complimentary ticket when they can fully afford the tenner....pretty poor stuff, lads.

Just a quick question, which I have posted on all the lichtie sites.. Anyone got any ideas what the club/town can do to get the troops to go to Gayfield the odd Saturday? I can't believe the low attendances - most lower than when we had in the 2nd Div. Personally I believe that more should have been made of the promotion achievement and a good bit of marketing and PR round the town, schools, boys clubs by the club could have made a difference. I know in Arbroath apathy rules, but does anyone have any thoughts on attracting new fans to the ground and persuading old yins to return?

A lot of people just cannot get to mid-week games, so back off on the bitterness about the shit crowd at the Ayr united game. Quite a few people also didn't know there was a game at all until the last minute....thus not being able to get in at all upon arrival well after kick-off. Still back to back wins, 6 pts in the bag, and a good solid looking back 4 (long may that continue). Perspective: Falkirk in Scottish Cup Final the same season (I think) that we were the laughing stock rooted to the bottom of the entire league set-up....congratulations to everyone associated (particularly the die-hards....you know who you are)

Excellent performance on Tuesday night by the Lichties. And a very well deserved 3 points. Could someone please update me as to Andy Cargill's previous performances. Tuesday night was only the second match I have been able to atttend this season. It may sound strange but the only part he played in a magnificent team effort was the free kick for the 2nd goal and the shot which led to the third. If he did this for us every week I to would be delighted, but his overall performance, in my opinion, was very poor. He looked like a little lost boy in the middle of the park, I would not be surprised if he had a sore neck as he watched the ball go over his head for about 50 minutes of the game. These comments are based on one game so may be unfair. If someone could update me it would be appreciated.

I heard the committee have a magic money making machine, and they won't turn it on. All football clubs have this facility, and that's why fans are always in the right when they scream that 'thurs nae money fur playurs'. The maths is: Gate money + sponsorship + magic money machine - expenditure = money for players.

I think not as you seem to sit in the stand so you can listen to the commitee and moan about them, if you did you would know we havent knocked the manager or comitee. As for Mr. Baikie, let it go I expect you were as delighted as us when Mr. Brownlie got us promotion, or are you one of them that says it was really Baikies team. As for changing the constitution, if you are that bothered about the commitee buy a season ticket and speak for yourself instead of hoping others will do it for you.

note to concerned, the answer is not to sack the manager but to sack the board. This is a repeat of Baikie, what budget has the Manager been given, why are we buying players who are not good enough. Gavin you mention size of players. Tthink of a back 3 of Webster, Rowe and Thomson, McGlashan, Mercer, Johnston and Cusick. Players like that are the size and quality we require, if Baikie was still here these players would still be playing. All the talk of supporting the Bboard is crap. Help! I'm in Liverpool and I'm drowning in a sea of wanton hyperbole as the all types of media gush that Liverpool have beaten Germany 5-1. What? When I left my house having caught the first few minutes, Janckers had just toe-poked them into the lead, I thought that a thoroughly satisfactory evening would ensue. Couldn't believe it when I heard the score later. How had the biggest team of minkers in football conjured such a result? Then I saw the game and saw the German defence and remembered that Scotland had beaten this crew last year. But its just too awful to contemplate. I've got weeks of this media tripe to suffer. Luckily, most minkers in Liverpool recognise that this English have still got a very long way to go before they can be counted in with the best. As for Scotland, I can only weep and hope that the Belgians are more shite than we are.

Was just wondering about the attendance for the Airdie game. The paper I have says it was 976 - is this correct? Seems a bit low for the first game in the 1st division since forever - I'd have thought it would be a bit bigger, especially as I'd have expected Airdrie to have a decent sized away support. Wasn't the attendance popping semi regularly like 1-1.3k against lesser away support during the bearded army hysteria?!

Gavin, As you have opened up the subject to debate from your mention of it in the Airdrie report, and in my duty to help ensure accurate, fair and unbiased reporting in these pages... "...she was called Miss Milne. Recollections came flooding back of how she had caught me skiving school an had been caught by her and the tennis girls cuddling a lassie at the back of the swimming pool." My recollection of the events were that your description to me at the time was not exactly as quoted above....a more accurate recollection of what you told me would be by replacing the word 'cuddling' with something considerably more ambitious and yes energetic. You got the last three letters right though!

An important issue which needs addressing.

With the new fence splitting the ground in two and the pie shop looking like its in the away end, and the toilets in the home end were there a load of hungry Lichties on Saturday, and a load of cross legged Diamonds?

Capt McSensible, over the hills

After the lively curtain raisers, I reckon the home game with Airdrie is where the season really starts. Airdrie are the sort of team Arboath need to take 3 points off at home to habe some sort of chance of league survival. Airdrie had a up and down year last season with all their off-field troubles but will, as ever be tough, and if tru to their tradition, fairly physical. A win is a must for Arbroath but no that easy. Any element of surprise/complacency now vanquished after last Saturday's fine result in Dingwall. C'way the lichties

Reading my newly purchased Wee Red Book, and reviewing the forthcoming season's fixture list, I must admit to succumbing to nervous panic. There are some strong teams in this league and, from what I can see, no real weak ones. Impossible to see where 40 points for survival, or anywhere near, will come from now. Most promoted teams to the First immediately return to the lower reaches. But I haven't given up hope. Our first 2 months in the Second Division, three years' back, were fairely disastrous but we pulled out of that one. AFC have shown haracter in recent years and they'll need it now.

I have heard that Arbroath have signed a young lad called Adam Cheetham who comes from a village near Edinburgh, allegedly had a good season in east amatuers last year. does anyone have any knowledge of this?

As a small ambitious club on a big adventure into division 1 I cannae understand why there has been so much negativity in our seasons build up.Chances are we'll come straight back down...SO! Let's enjoy it and get behind the team.Is it not to support them that we go to gayfield in the first place? C'MON YEE LICHTIES.

So the coming season will be a fiasco. It will not be the first such one. Nae doot a learning experience assuming we don't fold therafter

Don't agree with the orthodoxy about increasing professionalism and `business acumen'. Of course, a modicum is required but what is the point in clubs like Arbroath getting too ambitious. Unless we can attract lighntening in terms of megabucks, clubs like ours will always be among the also-rans, offering a community focus/interest but very limited success. The danger of swimming with the sharks is that we may get eaten. I'd much rather the Lichties survived another 125 years of mediocrity rather than become another failing business or perhaps the plaything of a modest businessman. AFC is UNIQUE in its committee system why not try and make a success of this while accepting inherent limitations. Cway the lichites

I hear on the grapevine that Robbie Raeside decided to join Alloa as he did not have the guts to spend another season fighting against relegation in the First Division (as he did last season with Moprton). He would also (probably) get more win bonuses with Alloa and a possible promotion bonus (which he would not get at Gayfield).

And so another season dawns on us, we start the 1st division with less players than left the 2nd with, we have very few decent central defenders, sorry any central defenders full stop. We have a chronic problem on the left wing, heenen(possibly to be sold on the right), our strikers are old/walking wounded/stopped by acts of god otherwise known as mallen/brownlie/steele, our players are underpaid, undermotivated and under supported and theres no point blaming the board. Its our fault, the fans. As a collective many of us fail to get their arses down to gayfield on saturdays, we turn up when theres a big match on only. Our club is funded by gate money and these people contribute bugger all to it. These same people then proceed to moan about the lack of incoming players. Well this is your chance, if you want more and better players then get your arses down to gayfield next season. But not for one or two games or until we lose, stay for the whole season and then well start to see progress being made. I am not a fan of the committee but this club has an opertunity for the fans to get their points of view forward and we need to treasure that or well go the way of motherwell and Airdrie. Please note that i am not related to the commitee or its members in any way.

Do we have any ambition first, signing target and ex lichtie Robbie Raeside joins SECOND DIVISION Alloa and then the ex money grabbing saviour of Arbroath Paul Tosh joins the Bridie Munchers, for f*** sake what is going on at Gayfield. Come on Brownlie get your finger out and improve the club.

Sorry - you did say that - I just didnae read it properly. But to re-iterate my second point I'm more concerned with whats going on with the playing staff! I've just been on the official site and they are making a great song and dance about sponsorship opportunities (and it looks like the prices have gone up, ticket prices are going up (in fact I understand it's possible to get a Dundee Season ticket for less than the cost of ours) but still no word about new players.

Oops - I must have not made myself clear - "the powers that be" I was referring to were not the Committee but the Official bodies in Angus etc. who make decisions on where we play, where we stand etc. etc.

Re: Giving Up our Home End.

I've been going to Gayfield for more than 25 years, though since the early 80s its been on a sporadic basis. I have to confess if you had asked me what our 'home' end was I wouldn't have had a clue - certainly any time I've been there when we couldn't change ends (ie cup ties against big clubs) we've had the harbour end.

So I think to criticise the powers that be for 'giving up' our 'traditional' home end is a bit unfair (please note I am in no way a fan of the present comittee).

More importantly shouldn't we be questioning just what is going on with players? Ferguson would rather go to Stenhousemuir than us? Thomson and Crawford would rather be at QoS? and now Raeside is deciding between us and Alloa. Am I missing something? All these teams are 2nd dvision? Are we not attempting to match the wages these guys are offering?

I'm begining to suspect the comittee has already decided we're going to get relegated next season and that rather than fork out to try to keep us up they'll keep the club on 2nd division outgoings and just bank the extra revenues. What do other Lichties think?

New players - at least Paul Tosh has First Division experience. Strikers are not that common, even mediocre ones. The signing of Raeside would fill a yawning gap - maybe Rowe could be converted to central defence for a new classy duo (well??..?). It's a long close season and the gap filling has to go ahead of the team strengthening. Finally, what we need - at all costs - is a good start. Three years back we had disastrous first few monnths in the Second but clawed that back - but the psychological damage from a por start in the First may be terminal. They had better comes flying off the starter blocks

Heard a rumour today that Jon Crawford was only offered a one year deal and the others were offered two years. That doesn`t sound like "the deal he wanted", as quoted on the official site. Maybe some people should remember that there are two sides to every story before slating a guy who has been a loyal player for six years.

I'm shocked by the Tayside's Police serious overkill at wishing to end the century-long Gayfield tradition of switching ends, which is a pleasureable diversion. Crowds are now so low that they CANNOT seriously consider any realistic security threat arises from `mixing' - it encourages good banter. Typical insensitive excess from bureaucratic numpties with no interest in the community or the fans yet we pay the taxes that ensure there's never one around when you need one and, as in this case, far too too much interference when you do.

So the early betting for next season puts Arbroath as prime candidates for the drop. No surprise that, and the pressure's off. Alloa didn't do too bad - hardly a big fitba name. Which Div 1 teams are actually full-time anyway (understood Stirling Albion had quite a few fulltimers but didn't do much good this season). Europe here we come - well, I mean the possible preseason tour of Ireland. Now if we could only lay our hands on that elusive Forfarshire Cup (we could sell it off). Isn;t the close season lengthy???

There's nae time to waste, close season or not - barely time to appreciate the Lichties magnificent achievement before next season looms. Trust the management is moving on with selling and signing. Saw rumours about Jim Thomson returning to QoS (tragic if confirmed), signing of Harty from Stranraer (seen hius name on the scoresheet occasionally), plus effort to sign the Forfar duo - is it enough? (I'd also sign Barry Sellars) We know there's serious cash constraints but have to make an effort withoot going bankrupt. But it would be nice to see some of them who've come up from the pits - McAulay,Crawford, Florence, Hinchliffe strut their stuff in the First. Mixed feelings. OK so we could be heading south soon.

So the amazing Lichties came on strong to the finish line, defying our faithless expectations that they would not last the pace (and the very tricky closing straight with many tough away fixtures). O ye of little faith. This is a team/club of some character and ability - two promotions in four years, will we pay for this with two decades in the wilderness?? I felt privileged to be back in Arbroath, by sheer chance, for the final decider against Berwick and the Lichties' perfomnance was exceptional (and the crowd turnout, for once, acceptable) Mind you the variable and inconsistent opposition helped. Got to keep going on, even if the next step seems impossible. We spent most of the 70's in the upper echelons so why not again (apart from the spread of professionalism and the ever-yawning divide). A rich sponsor would help with the team building/strengthening needed - failing that, let's aim to be third bottom next year. C'way the Lichties

Congratulations and well done to the Lichties. Saturday was one of the best and most professional performances I've ever seen from the team. Gavin, I agree with you over Kevin Steele. I think the lad is going to be a very good player - he was outstanding on Saturday and in my opinion has given 100% in every game. He may not have had the run of the ball in some games but he will score in the not too distant future and that will settle his confidence.
