The window in Tutties was smashed by accident. However, it wasn't an accident when your fans came looking for trouble at half time. Several Berwick fans were spat on and punched. I notice you don't write that in your biased match report. You also forgot to mention the racial abuse the Berwick fans suffered at half time. Needless to say letters have already been sent to your Mickey Mouse football club.

Gavin,

I was there but couldn't find you. Mind you, you've got me in the crowd photo in the match report (bearded bugger at the back). Saturday was a very great day and one which has been an awful long time in the coming. I guess it was always going to have to come the hard way but come it did and by Christ the supporters, team, staff, town, Lichties awhir and anyone who ever cared for the real game of football deserved it. The celebrations just go on and on. Well done the AFC. All together now," no more goin tae Stranraer, no more goin tae Stranraer, na na na na etc."

Having faithfully clocked up the turnstiles for over 30 years, predominately in the lower echelons of Scottish football. I feel I must congratulate the present Lichties set-up and the spirit they've shown considering the D.B. and Montrose affairs. First division football is within our grasp and I feel sure we will have a good turnout of support for the Forfar and Berwick ties. But could the club go one further and entice the population of Arbroath to Gayfield by reducing the gate fee for the game against Berwick "You know it makes sense". Chosen Few member!!!

huge expectations, over the hills n far
11 Apr 2001 - 16:14:23

Getting nervous but best to be in the midst of the action than anywhere else. Can hardly bear to watch like most of the folks of Arbroath it seems. My excuse is living a continent or two away so limited scope - managed to catch about 6 games this year and may manage the Berwick game. Maybe all small towns have too many exiles leaving a harcore of enlightened progressives to turn up at Gayfield (compared to the sheeplike Huns/Tims). Anyway promotion is still all too distant - 9 points form 6 gasmes, 5 away is a lot to ask. No easy games there and the next four game away sequence a real test of character. As a neutral I'd put my money on Berwick but??? Unimaginable transformation from my last game (Novemeber away at forfar) when defeat would have meant we were deep in the relegation latrine. The 15 game unbeaten run seemed unremarkable at the time - too many draw - but fantastic in retrospect. Hope it keeps running. C'way the Lichties

huge expectations, over the hills n faraway
11 Apr 2001 - 16:01:41

Getting nervous,eh? I can hardly bear to watch. In fact, living a continent or two away means I am one of the missing fans on the terracing oft complained of recently. I think Arbroath and other small towns has many exiles - only the few dedicated progressives who remeain can be arsed showing any interest. May yet manage to the Berwick home game by chance (my 6th of the season). Still better to be here than anywhere else - gives some meaning to the end-of-season. It's still a big ask - 9 points from 6 games, 5 away to hit the 60 points which should clinch it. This next 4-game away sequence will be real make or break and no easy games among them. A test of character. The 15 game unbeaten was, in retrospect, quite impressive, if less so at the time. Serious doubt whether we have what it takes to survive in Div 1 but let's worry about that later - and try and make the best of this unexpected circumstance. One of the last games I managed was an away at Forfar in November wher, if we'd lost, we were deep in relegation dudu so never expected to be fighting it out at the other end come April. C'way the lichties

Yesterdays match was pathetic, we let their number 9 Chris Templemen run the show. The dunfermline reject was playing like a real pro. Grabbing shirt, using strength and battling. My suggestion is lets get a reject like that!

P.S what's with the crowds? All I heard at the match was the waves crashin off the sea wall. The Albion fans out sung us and there was only about 7 of them. Well it nearly outnumbered the 10 fans we had. The crowds are rubbish, get down to Gayfield for the last match or we wont go up.

Fraser, are you a Baikie Boy?? One of the people who don't take time to find out all the facts, before speaking. Andy Webster would have become a free agent at the end of the year, resulting in less money (probably), agent involvement, personal wishes. Why keep someone who is not 110% committed to our promotion push? By the way I live in Arbroath and am unsure on how much Hearts actually paid up front. So if you could tell me from the other side of the world, it would be much appreciated. Instead of continual slating, how about getting behind the team as a whole, including the committee (not board, board members usually get paid!) as I think their decision to appoint John Brownlie is one that not too many people could argue against.

P.S. "Bring back Baikie!!"

What a performance by the Lichties against those UNDERDOGS QOS. As soon as we went down 1-0 in the 1st 2 Mins. I thought we were on for a drubbing. But what a comeback. And Heenan was the best player on the night by from John O'Groats to Penzance(976 miles) WE'RE GOING UP!!!!!

Being away from my home town for the last 14 years. It is still the first scoreline I look for on a Saturday afternoon. A fantastic season whatever happens. I'm sure if we dig in and work really hard we can take on Dundee United!! next season.

why criticise the home support numbers, it doesn't help those who do show up. Id rather have 4 genuine fans than 400 fairweather fans, those who do turn up have put a lot aside to attend so, quit gripeing all the time. Its depressing.

I see that the webmaster and true Lichtie got their wish on Saturday with wightie being dropped.

What I don't understand is why after only one reasonably poor performance? did the "manager" want experience in the team again? if so he is a coward!, and has no bottle!

good win anyway, come on the first division!!!!

Now the threat of relegation's nearly tamed what prospect for promotion?. If the Lichties keep up their good form, averaging 2 points at home and 1 away, they could maybe reach 54 points at best if it doesn't all go pearshaped (high probability?). Berwick with lots of home games in hand and even Queen's could easily do better (assuming Cydebank drop out of the running and Stranraer have more away than home themselves). So the upcoming double encounter against these fellow chasers will probably be critical.

Surprised Mallan's workrate is criticised. That was his main asset before - is he fit? In the match Reports, please note time of score for benefit of goal for benefit of reader. Otherwise fine effort.

Calm doon, there's nae chance
18 Mar 2001 - 04:59:50

Nice to see another win though hardly promotion material. Before we get carried away, to correct the earlier entry, the Lichties now have 10 games left and only THREE at home (one coming up on Tuesday mibbee-QoS). Given that our away record is pretty dire - actually around worst equal in the league (incl only TWO wins out of 11 starts), I wouldn't take anything for granted. I expect this handicap to tell. On the plus side, another 3 points and we should be clear of relegation - 44 points usually does it. Shame to see Montrose leave the fit of the table down below. As for Gayfield roar, good the folks that do turn up, the attendances are a disgrace.

Great result today. Division 1 here we come hopefully. Webster had another gret prformance as did Mercer in the first half. If we win on tuesday we are set up well for the run in especially since 7 of the last 10 games are at home so the opposition will be put off by the Gayfield roar. Or maybe not since naebody seems to go anymore?

From Sky Datastream I notice that Hinchie is in goal today. Okay Wightie didnt have a good game last week but to drop him after one poor performance is an absolute disgrace. Wightie has played well since he forced himself back in the team and before some arsehole says we need Hinchie's experience have a think about which goalie has played in all of Arbroath's big games over the last 3 season, promotion run in, Scottish Cup V M'well - yes Wightie. If you want a goalie that bottles it - Hinchies yer man - remember the Scottish Cup against Montrose. I believe both Goalies contracts run out this summer - can think of one who I would like to stay and one who I don't really care if they do.

I wonder if the Manager listens too hard to the 'Webmaster' after his OTT comments last week.

17 Mar 2001 - 05:18:02

I knew Arbroath was backward but did not even that burgh offer more than 1 year's schooling to its yoof? ie 1970. It explains a lot. However no wonder young fans are being scared away from the hallowed terraces when such ill-educated monsters from the dark past are frightening the kiddies. Something should be done. By the way, I notice less guestbook interaction nowadays - have all the other lichties fans turned to website pornography? No, fair enough, your photos cover that angle too

From my recollection the strange folk were at Arbroath High School in 1970 and from left to right look as if they are Ewan "Floyd" Forbes, ? Goodfellow, Harry Hucheon, Bob Ness and from the report the last one must be Tam Booker.

While it's quite amusing to read a celebrity fan edition of the web (ie Stranraer game report), what about identifying the strange folks in the phot and maybe even say when they were around - if this doesn't compromsie them in the eyes of the constabulary. Spose its Ok it the fitba's a bit on the dreary side but wouldn;t want it to go too far. Talking of which, who is the the best known supporter of Arbroath?

On a separate matter, somebody was asking about Forfarshire Cup triumphs. I read (Bruce Middelton book on Arbroatyh) they won it in 1945 and most of the 30's. Is it still around? Isn't reality a pain

The result was a fantastic one and I hope the boy's will go on from here and secure Promotion even though I here some pepole don't want it but after all we had to indure in the early 90's I think we should take everything we can. Well done to little Webby on another good performance maybe if he keeps it up he'll get the big money move he wants and the club do as well and he can eventully by around o drinks for the boy's. Hello to Karen Fleming, Wendy Edwards the hard core fans and Gemma. Hope its not to cold back there for you now. Did I see those manky minkers Forbes, Ness, Goodfellow and Hutchison at Gayfield yesterday? Or was it a bad dream. They call themselves Lichtie supporters but turn up only once every 2 years to shout abuse at the boys in maroon and the man in black. 8 hour flights and trouble making a connection at the London shuttle is a poor excuse for such infrequent attendance.

Regular attenders at Gayfield may soon see a rash of commemorative plaques on each of the pillars of the touchline fence. These represent the conquests of John Goodfellow, that well known Gayfield minker, who claims to have serviced the entire female population of Arbroath during the years 1969 - 71.

I'm well out of it faraway places but miss the tension of a Saturday night waiting for the 'Broath results and a remarkably efficient report posted on the Webbysite (should it be renamed in view of this latest saviour or is the burgh's memorial theatre sufficient deference) i'm dead against any `winter break' - let the weather do that, that way it's more `targeted' than just setting a fixed period. Though they could maybe opt out of some fixtures a bit earlier given fan inconvenience. A practical question - when was the last time the Lichties won the Forfarshire Cup and, if naebody lnows where can such information be located

In view of current livestock disease, should they no consider burning some of the Old Firm camp followers, better known as animals?

So Dave Baikie never managed to get a berth in the senior game and has filled the gap back at Tayport in the juniors. Seems to me most senior clubs don't have much of a clue - he produced the goods with Arbroath when they were a long lost cause. Still he could've joined one of our Angus rivals which, after the Tommy Campbell incident, would have been discouraging. Good luck away tae the Loons this weekend. We need a few wins now but, of course, they need them even more. The last encounter was quite enjoyable (1-0 back in November) but I doubt Forfar will be so ineffectual this time. A tought one

Insider should be more specific - is it a player, if so a problem. Regarding Mallan, he was fairly and increasingly effective in the games in November/early december - a good leader of the line, holds the ball up well though not a natural scorer. It would be good to keep him if he can keep his temper. More worryingly - why are folks like Fotheringham etc leaving and others not joining. Is a money or an ambition thing. Bring back Jimmy Fotheringham - who was a bright spark in the Arbroath frontline in the dim days of the late 80's. Finally, why start a game when there's a good chance it'll be called off? Why plan a game involving a long trip for the away side when there's a major doubt? C'way the Lichties

I thought id just like to say that after watching Arbroath under 18s at the weekend I would like to assure the readers that I looking forward to the future. The scoreline against Albion Rovers did not do the youngsters credit as it should have been going on 10-0. The game was a thrill to watch. There wasn't just a few people that were eye catching. The goalie pulled of some fine saves. The defence was well organised and didn't let many shooting opportunities arise. I was also gobsmacked about the composure of one of the centre halfs who in my mind was the man of the match. The midfield were very classy with Heenan and Henslee both showing there experience. Although I thought the forwards were abit rusty they seemed a goal threat everytime they went forward. I believe many of the youngsters will break through to the first team sometime next year. I must give Ray McWalter credit for producing some talented youngsters. Even this year the likes of Webster, Heenan, Henslee, Steele have broke through. These next few years will be an exciting time for the Lichties.

As for slagging off manager, board, players, other fans, don't know where fitba would be without it - hegelian dialectics nae doot. But small clubs need to keep this in perspective. im beconing ever more concered with the level of critisim being dished out during your match reports. Surely the job of the web site is to get behind the players especially the younger ones, who seem to get no praise what so ever! How can the likes of you expect them to play well when, no matter what they are "slagged off" by your web site. The likes of Webster, Wight, Heanan and Steele represent the way forward for the club and as a result they shouldn't be given as ruff a ride as they are given by your site! They are young, and apart from Wight, have very few appearences between them. With this in mind they will make little mistakes, but surely your site should emphasise the good things the four do on a saturday. In your report from saturday (Queens Park match) you seem to concentrate on the fact that Webster gave away "needless free-kicks" as aposed to they good takles he made or his good distrabution. not to mention the countless headers he one under pressure. You also only mentioned, very briefly Wights saves in the second half (i was there) or his one just before half time, you again only focused on the fact he never came for two crosses. (i seem to remember he came for one either side half-time and then started two quick attacks). You also have been guilty of "slagging off" other players such as John Cusick, who in my view is a quality player. LAY OF THE PLAYERS!!!!!!! GIVE THEM INCOURAGEMENT INSTEAD!!!.

I think that Arbroath should consider hanging onto goalie Craig Wight. He is consistent every week, and he always gives is all and more. Not like some of those other tricks that call themselves football players. Flo for one I think that he is past it and I hope that Brownlie decides to give some of the younger lads a chance, for at least you will know that they will give you 110% every week.

Is there any truth in the rumour that Stevie Mallan was substituted against Forfar in order to ensure that the referee did not send him off having already been booked and the referee was refusing to give any fouls against Stevie regardless of how bad they were?

re concerned just when is everybody going to start getting behind the team and stop this crap about rumours of this and rumours of that, it is just causing more and more hassle for everybody,ok we are a small club run by a committee who remember also have to buy season tickets) and I think also have the club at heart, so stop all this rumour mongering and get behind the team.

I read some disturbing news below concerning the gang of five that "administer" the club. Tell me its not true, especially given that the 1st Div boys are looking to leave us for "mammom". Oh and Riddler..quit showing off!

Update from Gayfield Thomson is away because he played a part in the Montrose fiasco, also the Sportsman's dinner is a balls up, the annual calendar was not done by him, yet John praises him, part of the self preservation society. I hear that the Secretary offered his resignation but was turned down - why? is it because the gang of 5 would now be down to 3 with Thomson away. Answers please. I also hear the 3 of the young players had to sign a special form in order to play in the cup tie, as the committee have stalled on signing their new contracts. another giant cock up. The rumors are they want away. Also a lot of first team are out of contract and will not renew. The papering over the cracks will not last come on John time for you and your gang to go if you have any feelings for the club

If Mallan is still out start with Steele, the boy has been great recently and deserves the run. Mallan hasn't got it anyway and McGlashan should be shown the way to the Vic's

just a bad dream?

The Stenny result was a welcome relief after the Montrose nightmare but doesn't prove much (we all knew there's little difference between Divs 2 and 3). The league position's a bit deceptive though - we've played 3 more home than away games. But it's all so tight that a good run could prove miraculous.

Well done boys for trouncing the Stenny minkers. Keep going in the league and push hard for that promotion place. You have to take a long hard look at yourself though if you get beat by f***ing Montrose. Hopefully now the manager will give the younger players a run after good performances against Stenny or what is the point of having them. G'DAY to the Lochlands and Cricket boys hope it's not to cold on the terracing.

Brown Lie surely cannot change the team for the next game can he. Bizarre as it sounds Whitey gives us many more 'attacking' options with his kicks/throws than Hinchcliffe ever could. From memory Whitey has only been sent off for touching the ba outside the box rather than the teddy out the pram job we saw last Tuesday (and I think he done something similar last season) Hinchie has become a liability. When do their contracts end and is there any plans to renew both/either ???

WELL DONE THE BROATH FOR GOING NAP ON SATURDAY AND THIS WAS DONE WITHOUT 6 OR 7 OF THE PRIMA DONNAS THAT PLAYED AGAINST SCUMTROSE. BROWNLIE I HOPE YOU STICK WITH THE YOUTH A BIT MORE, AS THATS THE WAY FORWARD. AS FOR THE COMMITTEE GET A GRIP, CAUSE IF YOU LOT DO ANY MORE DAMAGE YOU WILL ALL GET TARRED WITH THE SAME BRUSH i.e LOSERS.

The Lichties played excellent on Saturday with the young stars showing their worth. The question is how did stenny get to fourth playing like that??

IT IS TIME NOW FOR ANSWERS. THE COMMITTEES GAMBLE ON FIRING BAIKIE TO RESTORE THEIR POWER HAS FAILED. THE CLUB IS IN FREEFALL. MAY JOHN AND HIS GANG RESIGN NOW, WHILST THEY STILL HAVE A SHRED OF DIGNITY. THE DAYS OF AMATEURS RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL CLUB WERE OVER MORE THAN A DECADE AGO. GET THE COMMITTEE OUT AND BAIKIE AND HIS TEAM BACK BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
