What is Square Dancing?

Square Dancing is done in groups of four couples facing each other to form a square set. In response to instructions from a caller, the dancers move around in time to the music carrying out various manoeuvres to form different patterns. Eventually the caller brings everyone back to their original positions. Dancers need only know the individual moves as the sequences are cued by the caller. Because of the co-operation needed between dancers, it is a highly sociable form of dancing and has been called “fun and friendship to music”.
Although seen by most people as an American pursuit, square dancing has its roots in Europe. People from virtually every European country, including England, emigrated to the "new world" during America's first 200 years, taking their dance traditions with them.
In the course of time, with the movement of populations within America, the various original dance forms became more and more integrated. Today all the moves have been standardised worldwide.
In the 1940s the American forces brought square dancing back to its roots in Europe, and currently there are more than 200 square dance clubs in the UK and 9000 worldwide. As all the calls are in English our dancers can square dance anywhere in the world.
