Coblers Monday are Mick Haywood, Allan Perks and Mike Stather, three stalwarts of Whitby Folk Club. The group was formed in 1996 in readiness to perform sea songs and shanties for the HM Bark Endeavour Whitby Homecoming Festival in 1997. The group name is derived from the wont of Whitby coble fishermen zaiking (not putting to sea) after a weekend's over indulgence. The practice of returning to the Towns hostelries for a reviving 'hair of the dog', was known locally as a 'Coblers Monday', The vastly experienced trios wide ranging repertoire of Seafaring Songs, Sailors Chants, Socio-political anthems, Humorous ditties, Traditional lays and Drinking strains are performed mainly unaccompanied with the groups underlying sense of fun shinning through their powerhouse singing. George Clarke the fourth and honouree member of Coblers Monday joined the group in 1998 whilst Mike Stather was working in Malawi. His many talents and his vast experience as a solo artist were shanghaied in the traditional manner at the Captain Cook festival in Whitby. He awoke after this weekend festival on the Tuesday to discover his fate. Since then he has enjoyed performing regularly with the lads, or so they tell him the next day.
