Our Area
Late in 1997 we had a large unused area of
land - previously vegetable gardens - it was decided a wildlife area should
be created to take advantage of this site. Early in 1998 we were awarded a grant
of £3000 from Barclays New Futures and in early 2000 we were awarded
£7000 from CSV Millennium Awards. This money is being used to maintain
and extend the existing wildlife area and is where Garforth Community College
wildlife project begins. (We currently have £2500 from our school being
a 'beacon school' to help us work with other schools)
We decided that the main feature of this area would be a pond. This was created using a JCB to dig out the pond and the re-landscape the area. The pond was then lined, sculptured and with the help of the of the local fire brigade filled in just two days. To comply with health and safety regulations a fence with lockable gates and "warning deep water" signs were put up.
Areas were then marked off and different habbitats were created. A sensory garden
was also built which provides the blind and partialy sighted an area of which
they can touch. (to see how the wildlife area looks now go to the
phototour)
