Maintenance

The following tasks are needed to be done at our wildlife area, you may find that many of them need to be done in any wildlife area.

  • Maintain Hedgerows - weed and prune by 1/3 to encourage thick growth (annual).
  • Maintain Meadows - early Spring cut if possible, then after flowering in late Summer.
  • Maintain Pond - remove leaf debris, trim off dead foliage of plants which are accessible (annual). Check regularly to see that all potted plants are upright; particularly after a pond-dipping session.
  • Maintain Woodland - regularly inspect saplings for damage, ensure that smaller saplings are not smothered by surrounding grasses. Mark all tree saplings with a post until growth is substantial. Ensure that labels are in place - some naming to be done.
  • Maintain Wood Piles - remove any covering grasses to allow viewing.
  • Maintain Paths - rake gravel and remove "weeds" occasionally. Remove fallen leaves during Winter.
  • Maintain Butterfly Garden - remove "weeds" and trim the edge of the Pond grasses which grow into the Garden.
  • Maintain Bog Garden - remove "weeds". Thin out invasive plants in Spring or Autumn; be careful not to puncture the liner
  • Maintain Fencing - apply a coat of preservative 2 yearly. Lubricate gate hinges and padlocks annually
  • Maintain a record of Flora and Fauna observed - daily/weekly/monthly
