Car Trips
|
|
When I was eleven years old, my Dad took driving lessons, took his test,
passed and bought a car. We then used to go on holiday in the car.
There were no motorways at first and so it took along time to get
anywhere. When the M1 was opened we went on it the first day -
just down to the first junction and then back again. When the Thelwall
Viaduct was built, we also went a ride on it and back just to see it.

For holidays we went to Devon and Cornwall; then Scotland and later abroad.
We stayed Bed and Breakfast but after nearly getting stranded in Scotland,
we bought a tent and went camping. In those days, the main roads in the
North of Scotland were narrow with passing places.

When we went abroad, we went on the car ferry and sometimes on the car
sleeper in France. The car struggled over the mountain passes into
Switzerland and occasionally we had to stop to let the engine cool down
when it became overheated.
