My father had a job at the Midlands Electricity Board in the centre of
Birmingham, my mother didn’t work but used to do shopping for my grannies
and used to sell savings stamps, a way to encourage people to save after
the War.
Myself and my parents
I had a Gran and Grandad who lived only two houses away from us
and at first we lived with them until we had our own house, that was when
I was three years old. My other Gran lived 100 yards away in a street at
the end of our street. My other Granddad had died when my father was 12
years old. I had two Aunts and Uncles and several cousins living in
Birmingham and another Aunt and Uncle and cousin living just the other
side of Chester on the Wirral. They used to visit us unexpectedly on a
Sunday sometimes. We didn’t have a phone and so the only means of
communication was letters or just turning up. When my Aunt and Uncle
from Cheshire came unexpectedly my mother used to manage to provide
them with lunch by doing extra vegetables and making the Sunday joint
go round further.
