There was less packaged food in those days, lots of foods were sold loose
and weighed out. My mother used to buy fancy foods like cakes for me as
the war had not long ended and during the war there was not much of this
type of food available. I can just remember the ration books and my mother
using the tokens to buy some types of foods. We used to buy a penneth of
chips from the chip shop and also some pink pop to go with it. Crisps
had little blue bags in them and some were plain i.e. with no salt and no
blue bags. Initially there were no other flavours - just plain crisps.
Later ready salted crisps came out and other flavours like cheese and
onion and vinegar. We used to go to another shop for ice cream which
was cut from a block and a wafer put either side. There were also cones
and we had vanilla and strawberry flavours. The ice cream vans came
round later on. My favourite foods were fried potatoes and egg for
breakfast and liver and onions for dinner. We also used to buy faggots
and peas and heat them up in a pan and on Sunday my granny used to cook
roast breast of lamb. My father was a "Fish Vegetarian" and so my mother
did not cook much meat. My granny used to spread dripping on bread for
a snack sometimes. My father used to eat cheese, eggs, beans and fish
instead of meat. We also used to have home made cakes and when I started
secondary school I used to have cookery lessons and I used to take the
ingredients in a basket and bring home what I had cooked. Some of the
things we made were scones, shepherds pie, jam sponge roll and lemon
meringue pie.
A Cadbury's Chocolate Advert.
I remember going on an outing to Cadbury's Chocolate Factory from school
and we were given a free box of goodies containing chocolates and sweets.
