Occasionally we went on longer outings. At the time we did not have a car and we used to get two buses to the Clent Hills about 10 miles away. We used to go at bluebell time to see the woods full of bluebells like a blue carpet. I used to like the flower fairies rhyme about the bluebells especially "They used to gather armfuls straight and long and home they’d troop with pride - Yes home they’d troop with pride." We used to just pick a small bunch to take home. There was a good view from the top of the Clent Hills on a clear day.

I used to go to the local Sunday School and they used to have outings to Clent. This time we went on the train and had to walk from Hagley station. We went to a different part of the hills where there were donkey rides. In the afternoon we had tea at a tea room before catching the train home.

Another favourite outing was to Dudley Zoo to see the animals. This was either two bus rides or one and a long walk.

Once we went on a really long outing to Gloucester on the train. We got the bus from Gloucester to the Forest of Dean where my father was brought up and had a long walk before getting the bus and train home. Later we had a car when I was 11 years old, it was then much easier to go to these places.
